Jerry Brown angers neighbors: His $3 million home sold to homeless shelter
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,158034,00.html

OAKLAND, Calif. — Mayor Jerry Brown (search) has angered some of his neighbors by selling his multimillion-dollar home to a group that wants to make it into a homeless shelter.

The two-time governor and three-time presidential candidate's 7,000-square-foot warehouse home is in Jack London Square, where lofts sell for $700,000. Covenant House officials are preparing to convert it into a shelter for 30 young adults.

Brown's spokesman, Gil Duran, said the property had been on the market for about six months and sold for between $3 million and $4 million. He called the controversy a "back-fence spat with a disgruntled neighbor."

Brown, once satirically dubbed Gov. Moonbeam for his futuristic thinking, moved to the warehouse in 1995 and lived there with a with a revolving group of roommates, including political activists, writers, artists, friends and intellectuals.

2. whatsoever you do unto the least of these....
I'm glad that 30 homeless people will now have shelter. May the hearts of the neighbors be opened, so that they can find that true riches come from helping one's fellow beings.

6. Jerry Brown is not what he appears to be
After what he allowed the Oakland police to do to those protesters he lost my support. He has sold out from what I see. I guess I think he has an alternative agenda. I am glad to see it put to good use but could it have been about the money as he could not sell it to anyone else?

12. I'm an tired of this uninformed nonsense. He wasn't there and the police
chief is gone. He handled the situation in a responsible manner rather than mouthing off and getting the city sued.

3. Jerry proved that there was more money in conservation than Fascismist
raping of land and buisness. they is why he got demonized so bad.. the money in conservation is LOCAL not Corporate money... and that is a crime against god.

8. When I first, barely got interest enough in politics to have any idea of
what was going on, I voted for him in the primaries. Seems like a hundred years ago.

9. I smell BS
I"m an Oakland native. Jerry's "house" is in a pretty rough area, right over the eastern portal of the Posey tube which goes to alameda. The building is a modern thing covered in corrugated metal. its nearest neighbors are a bar, some wharehouses and mixed used industrial buildings.

it's about two blocks away from the Produce district and about Five blocks away from Jack London Square.
There are some slow selling, over priced "lofts" down the street a couple of blocks away.
never believe anything Fox news tells you is a pretty good rule of thumb.

11. Good for Jerry. I'm proud to be backing him for attorney general
Putting the homeless before public opinion of him. This sort of integrity is very rare.

Why don't the rest of us have the social conscience to do what he did?

14. Hmmmm
I wonder what the property appraised for? What if he had an official appraisal for say $4 million. The article states that the property had been on the market for 6 months. Okay. So I would imagine at that point one would reduce the price a little to help move it. So let's say a true market price was $3.5 million. Well if he sold it to a business, he would get $3.5 million in cash. If he sells it to a non-profit for $3.5 million, he would get the $$$ plus he perhaps could claim he's selling at a $500,000 discount to the appraised value and get a nice charitable deduction.

Many on here are acting like he donated the property, not quite the case. And living in a house worth $4 million. Geez, talk about extravagant. Talk about two Americas. Damn. Let me see his tax return that doesn't claim a deduction between selling price and appraised value and I'll applaud him.
