Lindsey Graham should pull a "reverse" Strom Thurmond ?
I have heard just a small rumbling of discontent about Senator Graham on C-SPAN and a few radio call-in shows. More or less, they say he is dead meat as far as running for re-election in South Carolina. They are not going to forget this traitorous act that saved the filibuster for the Democrats. It was unforgivable.

However, we recall another Senator from South Carolina that broke with the Democratic Party and ran for president as a "Dixiecrat" in 1948. He later changed his Party affiliation to Republican. We all remember the red-headed stranger, Strom Thurmond.

Should Senator Graham consider making a similar move? If he is persona non gratis with his own Party, why should he stay and try to mend the fences for his next election? Why not just pull a Strom Thurmond on them and switch Parties? Would he be stronger as a Democrat than as a Republican? I'm certain the thought must cross his mind.

1. SC higher ups have been protecting Graham's gay secret for years. I think
they may decide to use it against him now unless he knuckles under for Bush.

5. If the fate of the unlamented Gov. Beastly is an indication
he is indeed toast. Though I don't think his "sins" are as serious to the rank & file as dissing the Stars&Bars. If he plays the full bore reactionary from here on in he might be forgiven.

I don't think that the Democratic Party needs another cheapjack opportunist.

6. I don't trust him
A day after the compromise he publicly stated that he would vote for the nuclear option if the Democrats try any filibusters, even on nominees that the agreement specifically exempted from consideration (the remaining nominees beyond the three that were allowed).

8. Graham is McCain's protege. I read the entire New Yorker article on
McCain, and Lindsay Graham was quoted about 20 times, speaking glowingly of McCain. Also, Graham supported McCain in the 2000 primaries, not Bush, and McCain talks about how he "schooled" Graham in Senate customaries and traditions. I have a feeling that Graham wants to be McCain's VP nominee in 2008.
