One thing Bush had dems on was the Nascar vote...
Which democrat could you picture appearing at a Nascar event and telling the drivers to start their engines? Would the fans appreciate it nearly half as much as they did when they hooted and hollered for chief monkey boy? Sadly enough it's becoming one the country's most popular "sports". Is there anyone that could break through to that crowd?

1. He had an arbitrary demographic label made up by political hacks?
Wow. I knew he had a secret weapon.

18. 75 million people, give or take, all over the country
Edited on Thu May-26-05 09:59 PM by davepc
For NASCAR, which counts 75 million people among its fans and whose TV ratings are higher than every major-league sport except the NFL, it is a chance at further growth.

4. My neighbor and I both love NASCAR
And we both voted for Kerry. And Clinton.

When Bush made his appearance at Daytona, he pissed off a lot of people. Dale Earnhardt, Jr, whose father was killed the year before at the track, was livid that Bush turned his hallowed race into a political game. A lot of fans interviewed after the race said the same thing, and some said they would change their votes.

Bush won in the South for a lot of reasons. NASCAR was not one of them.

Edited on Thu May-26-05 09:29 PM by FrenchieCat
Like racing because of the power one gets pushing the pedal to the metal.

Our secret weapon? I can see them loving the General! He represents tough masculine power and patriotic American Pie. Plus the General's off the cuff demeanor makes him much more effective than all of the other Dems. Not so staged...and he is from the south and resides there.

The guy fishes, golfs, swims, ride horses and hunts...basic man sports that many Nascar partake in. He's a man of the earth.

Also, Clark rebuilt his own car when he was in his 40s. All he would have to do is tell that story.

Middle America would eat him up once they got to know him just a little bit.

Plus the ladies wouldn't mind going to the Nascar tracks with the hubby to see that mature charismatic hunk!

7. Dale Ernhardt Jr..
told his fans to see "Farenheit 9/11", which shocked the hell outta me.

I could see any Dem doing that if they wanted to. I think that's what Dean is going around doing..talking to people that weren't being talked to before by Dems.

so funny!

Actually Bayh reminds me of Alfafa. I don't know if that would go over that well. Looks like the kid that the jocks would put into the locker for the night....until he got a bit taller, which would have been out of high school. He doesn't seem like a men's man to me. But maybe that's just me.

not that Kerry did, but Bayh cannot be branded a girly man quite as easily. neither can clark, though I feel bayh would be a better candidate.

13. I'll be attending a "Nascar Dad" event in Milwaukee next week and...
Edited on Thu May-26-05 09:44 PM by zulchzulu
...I'm doing the animation/video tribute for the soldiers gone as well as other events for Mission: Welcome Home. (http://www.dva.state.wi.us/Welcomehome.asp)

I designed the logo and have been trying to help out with the cause.

This event will be at a Nascar event called the Milwaukee Mile, which will feature General Tommy Franks and Lee Greenwood singing "God Bless America". There will be a tribute and animation before they speak/sing.

I plan on wearing my Kerry button. We'll see what happens. There will be t-shirts, buttons, car magnets and other merch where the proceeds will go to Mission Welcome Home.

I'm guessing that a lot of people who voted for Bush and have sons or daughters over in Iraq are not too happy with their vote.

23. I may meet him and hope to ask him how the war is going
I'll be firmly in the "support the troops when they come home" camp, which is a mix of people who support the war and those who don't who support getting the troops all the support they need when they come back.

It will be interesting to see what Greenwood would say...I think on the outside, he will unfortunately play the jingoist country western star...after all, he made it big with Gulf War I when he sang "Proud To Be An American"...

..who knows at this point what he or anyone thinks about the war. Even Novak is calling for a pullout.

a big nascar fan . . . as is my honey, and many of my friends, none of whom are freepers.

you don't have to be a southern, redneck, bush-loving ostrich to be a nascar fan. that was just another ruse perpetrated by the rw to claim a constituency. that said, many of the drivers are hardcore right wingers.

i doubt there are many regular southern folks who can afford the price of admission. it's not as cheap as a ballgame when you have to factor in airfare and jacked up car rental and hotel room prices.

i was fortunate to have missed shrub's appearance at daytona but my friend (and fellow progressive), willa was there. needless to say, she was less than thrilled.

17. Don't be to quick to generalize.
Like a lot of other sports, the hard core fans don't pay too much attention to politics---until it really starts to affect them, like their buddy getting killed in Iraq, or that $60 dollar tank of gas. If the truth can get through the MSM smoke screen, sports fans (working class males)will be some of the first to jump the repug ship.

24. NASCAR
There was a paralized NASCAR driver on the Today Show earlier in the week who was PISSED off that Bush had no brain cells when it came to stem cells.. I hope he continues to speak out!

Remember Senator Bob Graham sponsored one of the NASCAR drivers during his presidential campaign. I can't remember who... but I remember it making news..

I don't know if I buy into the theory that all nascar fans are pro *. I think it's something the * regime thought sounded good and are milking it for all it's worth. In reality, it's probably split down the middle.
