Poll question: Should Dean break his piggybank to win NH, or would you not have a problem
Edited on Sat Jan-24-04 01:49 AM by AP
if he looses NH with, say, 10 million left over?

For background, unless I read the FEC forms incorrectly, I believe that Gore had over 4 million in the bank on election day 2000. There's a high probability I'm missing some nuance to the filings, but when I saw that, my initial response was, jerk! He should have spent every penny he had to win that race.

So, I know it's different with Dean. However, I wonder if his supporers think he should give it his all (blood, sweat, tears, and dosh) to win, or would you understand if the bat was still corked with a couple mil and he lost?

And if he has 5 or 10 mil in the bank next Wednesday and he has finished in 3rd or 4th, what will you think he was thinking, and what do you think he'd do with the money? Would you think that that was just his personality?

So, If Dean loses...

2. I think your question is offensive.
You posit that Dean (or any pol) can win elections simply by spending money.

While it may seem that way from the 2000 selection, I don't think it's really true. Especially in New Hampshire, where the voters have been subjected to carpet bombing political ads for decades. Maybe the rubes here in Arkansas would be impressed by such tactics, but I don't think the NH hillbillies would.

3. If you're behind and you want to win and you have a lot of money in the...
...bank, what are you supposed to do with the money?

Do you think elections are about hoarding money? They're about getting votes. If you could run one more commercial, or fly in 10 more volunteers, or hire another consultant or a better speech writer, woulldn't you do that? And if not, why run at all?

4. two things
First, you are wrong about Gore. He had around a million or two left and also ran against caps. He was pretty much banned from spending that money, which is one of the reasons Dean was smart not to agree to those caps.

Second, There is only so much money which can be usefully spent in NH. I would prefer a third place finish with funds to a second place without them. He can come back on mini Tues if he has funds he can't if he doesn't.

5. Busting the caps just means you pay a fine. If it really mattered,
Gore should have busted the caps and held a fundraiser to pay the fine later. (I'll take your word for this being Gore's excuse.)

You're the first person I've seen who says Dean can come back without having a victory in NH, but you might be right.

6. He surely can from a decent second
and I think from a third place finish. He really can't bounce back if he has no money. Also, $20 million would be $20 per vote.
