The Fall of Arnold
Edited on Sat May-14-05 11:26 PM by Ruffhowse
Robert Greenwald

When the front page of the New York Times announces the fall of Arnold, then we know it is real. Now that we know he is falling, the big question: why? As a participant in the plans to dethrone the emperor, I want to chime in.

First, second, and third, this was about the grassroots (remember grassroots?) who were upset, angered, mad as hell and not going to take it any more.

Arnold's first big mistake was when he attacked nurses as "special interests." I kid you not – he really did! I mean, an actor who was getting paid 20 million dollars for six weeks work in a movie and was now fundraising big bucks every week from large corporations doing business with the state and wanting favors for their money was suddenly calling the nurses names. Turns out, he messed with the wrong folks.

Unlike the experts, the pundits, the politicos who check the wind before taking a position, these heroines went right back at him. They followed him to his glitzy money raising affairs, and they would not be silent, they would not be compliant, and they would not go away.

<snip>

Now it's the front page of the New York Times. From Mr. Universe to a bowl of jello in a few short months. It is a time to love democracy and to celebrate the power of old fashioned, non-consultant driven grassroots doing a job.

1. I am a teacher
who is just in awe of what the nurses have done in this regard. I attended an anti-gropinator protest organized by the nurses and I have never been more impressed! Of course, with nurses and teachers in charge, it was very well organized. Nurses rock!

2. THANX for son of a real nazi post..
I imagine the same script could work on grandson of a nazi..

"And to the surprise of the press and pollsters and politicians, his numbers went into freefall. But it was no accident, and it should have been no surprise. A bully took on the folks who make our daily lives safer. He took on students trying to learn, and teachers committed to teaching, and no matter what he said, or how he tried to seduce the media, it was over. The script had been written, and his role was the loser..."

I have heard it said that bullies are cowards..they sure seem to act from the same script.

4. Maria is no democrat
Her husband said he was 100% for education and after school programs and then he slashed the hell out of the programs.

As far as his muscle man image, the pic shown on the major news showing him with a sagging chest and gut, destroyed that image. He's been leading the good life, paid for by tax payers.

3. great.
arnold is karl roves trojan horse. he was progressive sounding enough to get elected in california, giving credibility to future republican candidates (this happened in FL in the 50's on) - and also his media blackout: "first non-speaking role" etc.

fortunately, the plot seems to be backfiring. ah-nuld is showing his true republican colors.

6. I have to pinch myself that
this is not a dream come true!

Way back when arnie the bloated baloney was talkin' trash to all those teachers, nurses, firemen, students, ect, ect..I thought why doesn't someone tell him to "shut up"..maybe they did but so glad arnie was so full of hubris that he revealed his true lies self.

I'm wondering how jamie lee curtis and ophra feel now that they helped elect his pompous ass?

20. It May Not Air For A Few More Months....
...he knows he's under investigation, (he doesn't know exactly why), he's already made attempts to clean up his act, I cannot give any more clues until I find out the program schedule.
Then I'll make a public announcement...

11. Regarding Arnold...
I have a feeling he won't run again for one simple reason. If you recall that governor's race, Arnold only debated the other candidates ONE time and was a no-show to the two other "major" debates they held.

If you remember.. the only debate he would agree to attend, is the only one of the three that provided the questions to the candidates beforehand. The other debates weren't set up that way and he refused to attend them.

He couldn't get away with that doing that again. Not as an incumbent Governor.

I remember people laughing about that debate- because for him, having the questions provided to "his people" a week or 10 days (whatever it was) before the debate, was the same as Arnold rehearsing his lines for a movie.. ...piece of cake.

Not only would he be terrified to actually debate in the regular format, he'd be eaten alive!!!

14. The commercials he's airing now
are just a horror show. He looks waxen and sounds unconvincing. I can't believe the kind of isolation he finds necessary to keep up the facade of his governance. I am still smarting at how badly the press covered the recall election and how poorly they have done since he has been governor: you would never know that his budgets have done what Gov. Davis planned because the press refuses to tell us. If it weren't for the teachers and nurses, we'd be left with his high approval numbers, I think. The press behaves as if it is covering a Hollywood premiere instead of politics and Californians have suffered terribly because of it.

16. The whole Arnold thing still blows me away...
:silly:

The residents of California who voted for him couldn't have in a million years been making their selection for the most politically astute, intelligent, experienced candidate.

So what exactly were they voting for?

Were they voting for Arnold because of his immense fame???

Or was it so they could say that Arnold Schwarzenegger is their governor?

The guy wouldn't even attend one single debate!! :o (ok, minus the one I mentioned where the questions were provided)

And that's all it took???

It will never in a million years make sense to me.

What-----were-----those-----people----thinking???

19. They were thinking about Konan and Ahhnold the body
Then they saw him on the beach with his sagging chest and tummy. It was Ahhnold who led the good life paid for by the tax payer.I don't understand why Maria stays with the man. He was for education and then cut it deeply, including after school programs. He's a eeewww.

15. Nurses, teachers, fireman, people who work for a living so other have a...
...chance to live and be middle class -- they should be the ONLY special interests.

Not Enron execs. Not media company execs. Not the people who benefit from the way Prop 13 taxes huge corporations almost nothing. Not the bond brokers.

Arnold showed his true colors, and Californians want a Democrat instead.

18. it's easier than that

Arnie was elected to balance the budget and knock off a deficient Democrat. He did these two things and then became Just Another Republican, and California Democrats walked away.

Arnold's other political assets were that of being an immigrant in a state whose population is defined by immigration, a movie star, and (somewhat paradoxically) still having Maria Shriver as his Significant Other.

It took Indies a while, but they realized he has no real sympathies for other immigrants or understanding of their needs and lines up with the 'native' sorts on everything. Then they realized he's no hero, just a small town boy from backwoods bits of Austria who just plays one in front of cameras.

And now Californians are starting to realize that his last bit of interest, the marriage to Maria Shriver, means nothing of any relevance to themselves- no insights, no connections useful to Californian interests, etc. I've heard that, wierdly enough, Californian Republicans considered Maria Shriver a reason Arnold would have awesome pull in Washington...no, I have no explanation for this other than the usual Republican excuse: stupidity.

21. The Gropenator's main weakness is...
Arrogance. He believed that he could bully or charm anyone into what he wants. Now he knows that these tactics don't work on everyone. Californians made a stupid mistake by voting in this arrogant Rethug and many now know that.

22. Well don't count all you chickens before they hatch
Americans have proived time and time again how stupid they are. Arnold will win reelection easily I would bet. Bush* had less than fifty percent approval and he "won" easily. It makes no difference if exit polls (which had never been wrong before Bush*) said Kerry won overwhelmingly. Or Cheney said before the election "Polls may show we are down but just wait until the votes are counted"
