Which war is Iraq?
Edited on Thu May-05-05 08:45 PM by realpolitik
The act of comparing Iraq to WW2 is not apt.

How, precisely is
squatting on the world's second largest oil reserve, standing back while 5000 years of civilization were looted, in the wake of the shock and awe that was unleashed on a civilian population, like racist genocide whipped up by people resenting the raping of German coal, oil, gold by the Allied Powers after WW1?

They say a well asked question answers itself. In both cases, it's the greed. In both cases, it is the xenophobia.

The arguments for staying in Iraq to 'fix it' are jejune or insufficient. You cannot invoke the pottery barn rule after you shoved the customer into the display rack. We have no valid role in Iraq, save potential customer.

We cannot wrap ourselves in the victory of the greatest generation after Baghdad and Fallujah. Trying to do so really shows the paucity of our attempts to justify our betrayal of the trust the civilized world after we turned the attempt to restore justice and order after 9-11. *We* are the rogue state, and the world is going to smack us down without firing a shot.

Rather than WW2, Winston and all that, consider that this war is a lot more like Afghanistan vs USSR. The Saudis like the US, have an official detente with us while funding the wahabbist asymmetrical war against modernity, just like we did with bin Laden's buddies in the 80's against the 'evil empire'.

Or perhaps it is the Spanish American War, in the sense that we are re-introducing the world to good, old fashioned, family values Yankee Imperialism.

We will get out of Iraq when we are forced out by economics.
And until it is not profitable, Iraq will shudder on the brink of civil war, perhaps for two more generations. They will hate us for their slavery, not our freedom.

1. Vietnam was a bad experience and I can still remember how
frantic and sudden came the fall of Saigon and evacuation. Although I wasn't here to see it the Korean War also had its bumps and ended with Armistice (definately no victory)..From the sounds of the news enough of them (Iraqis) hate us now..Freedom from what, and to do, have, and enjoy what? Life in the West is basically about servitude..They'll see!!

2. Third war to your left.
You'll see it on the shelf above Afghanistan.

3. I think your right, but it depends on who writes the history books;
Bill Krystal would have a very different opinion. I think it be the classic example of how you need to have a plan after the invasion.

4. Which War
I rather liken it to President Johnson's War in Viet Nam. Based on lies and unwinable from the start.
