Sailors load a MK-46 Mod 5A torpedo into the launcher tube of the MK-32 Mod-15 Torpedo Launcher aboard the USS Mustin (DDG 89) on April 18, 2005. The torpedo launcher holds three torpedoes and can destroy enemy submarines or incoming torpedoes fired at the ship. USS Mustin is currently deployed with USS Carl Vinson's (CVN 70) Strike Group in the Arabian Gulf providing Maritime Security Operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Maritime Security Operations (MSO) is aimed at setting the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment. Illicit activity at sea has a global impact. MSOs pressurize the maritime environment and are the single most significant component of the conventional maritime effort against terrorism.
