3. That was easy. Eisenhower could just as easily been a Dem.
Both parties courted him.

8. Ike actually found himself at odds with the Republican Congress
during his first two years in office. Often, the Democratic Congress had to come to his aid.

Robert Caro's third book on LBJ, Master of the Senate details a lot of Ike's struggles with the far right, as do many other books.

If anything, Ike delayed the onslaught of conservatism within the GOP for several years.

5. Better yet, which one had any shred of integrity
Same answer. Maybe Goldwater and Dewey too, but none of the others.

7. I can't make up my mind. It's between Goldwater and
Eisenhower. The latter will probably win, however.

11. Yeah, I'd give Goldwater props for integrity as well
no matter how much I may have disagreed with his views.

18. A lot of people disagreed with his views at the time,
from what I understand, and later reassessed them and admired them.

10. Ike
The only other ones with any integrity were Dewey, Goldwater, and Dole.

12. Did Ford have any integrity?
I'm pretty young so I don't know much about him. Eisenhower probably did have integrity but he did cower to McCarthy and didn't stop him.

13. Ford wasn't Presidential material in my view.
I always read him as a moderate party loyalist.

14. It is true that Ike could have done more to reign in McCarthy......
But he did not like McCarthy, nor McCarthy's goal. However, Ike was a Republican, still all in all...and so there certainly was some hesitation on going against your own. I conclude that Ike had SOME integrity, but he could have had a great deal more. That is why his presidency was not as great as it could have been. He was a mixed bag at best.

Eisenhower was also criticized for not taking a public stand against Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist campaigns. Privately he held McCarthy in contempt for the senator's attacks on his friend and World War II colleague, General George Marshall, Secretary of State under Truman. He stated "I just won't get down in the gutter with that man". This was little comfort to the many people whose reputations were ruined by McCarthy's allegations of Communist conspiracies. Later, it was revealed that Eisenhower worked behind the scenes to bring McCarthy down.

15. Ford's only action was pardoning Nixon
He was never elected VP or President (Nixon appointed him VP after Sprirow Agnew resigned).

that was probably his biggest contribution to our nation.

17. 'most recent' goes back 80 years?
Recent should be since Nixon, when the Republican Party changed dramatically. Plus, how many people here remember Eisenhower? I like Ike, but I would be voting on a historical record rather than my own opinion.

I voted for Dole in this pole. He wasn't perfect, but he was genuine. However, in 96 I voted for Clinton...the first time I ever voted for a Dem for president. I escaped fundamentalism in 95.

21. Dole lost any claims to integrity when he joined in the smears
against Kerry. I applaud Terri Gross for asking him about it and I hope he is asked about it in every interview for the rest of his life.
