Chaffee's vote will put Bolton in....
Still think he's better than a Democrat? No matter how moderate he is, he seems to vote Repub line when they need him. He should be challenged.

1. He is a vote for Frist for Majority Leader and he goes along with
almost all of the Republican proposals.

Yes, he has to go.

We have to target the Republicans in Blue states - Rhode Island, Maine, etc.

2. Did you see the DU poll yesterday...
...when a bunch of folks voted to replace Lieberman before Chaffee? I think there was a lot of kool-aid being served yesterday.

NGU.

3. Don't people get the idea of how important it is who controls the Senate?
What legislation gets brought up?

Being able to do actual investigations into the Bush Administration, with subpoena power?

That is incredibly frustrating and short sighted to me.

Sure, I'd rather have a different Democrat representing Connecticut then Joementum but what we really NEED is to pick up Republican seats and gain control of the Senate!

9. Has anyone thought beyond the first level?
Dumping Lieberman would send a message to the rest of the Dem congress, vote Dem, or we don't need your ass and we'll get rid of you.

Dumping Chafee flips one vote.

You tell me which is more valuable to our overall goal. It damn sure isnt' as simple as you make it out to be.

4. A more interesting question would be what if he does vote against
Bolton and basically votes in line with the moderate (or better yet the liberal Democrats) on other issues? In this case, would the Democrats opt not to seriously challenge him? He would still be a vote for Frist.

If he doesn't opt to become a Democrat, he has a lot of not very good choices. His comment that he wished Bolton was not up for the UN, because it was a hard vote is interesting. His choices seem to be:
-Vote his conscience - and he'll probably get a Rep primary challenge
-Vote a Republican line - which will destroy his reputation as a mod/lib Republican and may cause him to lose in 2006 in a liberal state

If his primary value was keeping his seat, becoming a Democrat would likely maximize that, but he would then be in the minority. Beyond that it's not clear which of the other two options is worse for him and may depend on the nature of RI Republicans and the rules on who can vote in the primaries.

5. Chaffee must go

He's vulnerable. If he wants to stay in the Senate, he'd better change parties, otherwise, he's gone.

6. If they need his vote he'll vote with the Repugs, if they don't then he'll
vote the way folks believe a "moderate" should vote to keep up his act.

7. well let's put the pressure on him
Write letters. I know things seem futile right now. But it wouldn't hurt to write a few letters. I have a list of everyone who is on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on my blog. Please write to them if get a chance. Bolton blows and could start a world war in that position.

8. I'd like Chafee if only he'd switch parties.
As of now, he's helping them maintain a majority, which makes all the difference in the world.
