Daily Show is helping serve up the Iraq Democracy Kool Aid
The bit with Samantha Bee; "Covering the reconstruction of Iraq isn't nearly as exciting as covering the destruction of Iraq." "The smell of death is gone, now it's just lamb kabobs, and I can get that on 9th Avenue." She goes on to complain to Jon about how boring it is to cover city council meetings and the minutia of government when its spoken in Arabic. Jon seques by saying "From the flowering democracy in Iraq to the crumbling one here at home..."

A stark irony; Bee was reporting in front of a green screen, obviously...but the backdrop they used was that of the very same hotel compound the real reporters have been sequestered in for months, the U.S. Army having deemed it too dangerous to be in downtown Baghdad. No death? Flowering democracy? There hasn't been a real news report or White House press conference on Iraq in nearly a month. Where is Jon getting his fake-news info? He's still the best there is on teevee, but by buying into the BushCo bullshit, he's doing everyone a great disservice.

3. My impression was that it was all a bit tongue-in-cheek,
with little or no Kool-Aid being served.

4. I haven't seen it yet but...
from the way it sounds I'd have to agree with you. TDS hasn't shown much tendency to start letting the current administration slide. Could be that some of us are a little too thin skinned and need to keep their sense of humor intact.

5. Jon sounds right on the money to me. Repukes want democracy
in the mid east to stop the transnational tribals like Islamist fundamentals. Repukes want tribalism at home to stop democracy.

Democracy & tribalism are opposites.

6. daily show coverage
I don't always get to see it, but somehow given the fact that most of the national assembly meetings are reduced to shouting matches and soldiers are still dying everyday, I think the story was very tongue in cheek and mocking the current MSM coverage (or lack thereof depending on the story)

10. I think I'm a damn good judge of sarcasm and irony!
I kinda do it for a living (see links below). TDS is always full of sarcasm and irony, but this was NOT that type of sarcasm and irony. The report was from an angle of there being nothing much to report there now because things are going pretty smoothly since the elections. This wasn't the usually stylized TDS mocking irony/sarcasm type stuff. The joke was what we Americans find titillating as news, and that pretty much all is quiet and boring there now, NOT that the news that IS happening isn't being reported. "Iraq has lost its luster," she said.
