1. The Bush Conservatives do not want "strict constructionists"
--the "strict constructionists" have decided against them. They want compliant "fellow travelers" like AG Gonzales who "give them what they want --- no questions asked."

With everything Director Hoover and Senator (Joseph) McCarthy hollered about - the threat to American comes from the spiritual descendants of Director Hoover and Senator (Joseph) McCarthy.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Terri Schiavo's case has put lofty principles of American government through an extreme workout. In a life-or-death drama that has ricocheted between courthouses and capitols, abstract terms such as the separation of powers, checks and balances and federalism have become painfully real.

The battle, like many public policy disputes, has been tangled in politics and snarled in finger-pointing. But beyond that, it has been a rare display of all the institutions of democracy at work at the same time.

Not a pretty sight, says Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University.

"It is in fact an object lesson on democracy; it just doesn't happen to be a good lesson," he said.
