Jack Cafferty's "Last Day" Pool starting here!
Place yer bets. How long until the old curmudgeon gets retired or given his own show at 1:00 a.m. Sunday?

Thank you, Jack. You appear to be the only man in cable news who "gets it." (Dear god, I can't believe I'm saying that!)

3. Sorry...Jack just went on a rant, slamming Bush and Congress
spelled it out exactly as it is, while Bill Hemmer and Solidad sat dumbfounded, trying to steer the conversation. Jack went on about Bush staying on vacation after hearing getting the 9/11 memos, about the usurping of state's rights, about Congress cutting short its vacation for this but not being able to in order to enact 9/11 legislation. He was on fire. Hemmer tried to say, "but more to your point..." and went back to the Schaivo talking points. So did Solidad..."But don't yout think that poor family deserves..." and Jack nailed her, too. "NO! I feel sorry for the family, but it is the family's issue, and Congress has no business getting involved!"

I am heavily paraphrasing for space (and because of my feeble mind), but that's the gist. Jack went waaaaaaayy off script.

7. last days of jack
banishment, firing, or, worse yet, small plane crash or home suicide with a handgun.

Jack - beef up your personal security staff!

Thanks for the info. I don't consume ANY MSM, so it's hard to keep up with this stuff!

11. I am uncomfortable when "news" becomes opinion and commentary.
Even when I agree with someone, I still wonder "is it your job to tell me what you think? or are you supposed to report, as fairly and unbiased as you can, and let us draw our own conclusions?"

13. Isn't Hemmer doing the same thing by advocating for Schiavo?
Of course Hemmer is just reading from his script, and since he really has no opinions of his own, he didn't know what to say when Cafferty went off. Solidad was just as guilty, using her puppy-dog eyes to full effect as she prodded the old curmudgeon to get back on point.

So who is playing whom? Is there any point in watching anything that calls itself "news" on teevee? <rhetorical ?? alert!!> Who is to say? I mean, I agree completely with what Cafferty is saying, so naturally I think he is RIGHT (as in correct!). Still, notice he didn't mention the protests his "network" was ignoring. Hmm. Oh, WTF...this whole thing has turned into Through The Looking Glass II, and I want to think America will finally stand up in outrage. But, I've thought that about so many of the outrageous things BushCo has done which have gone unanswered by the Comfortably Numb, I'm pretty close to joing their ranks. It seems so peaceful to be stupid.

To the original point, though, what exactly would you consider "unbiased reporting" on this issue when the players have framed it in such a black & white, good vs. evil way? Anything divergent from the viewer's talking-points pov will just be seen as "telling me what to think."

I really, really do still hold out hope that America will come to its senses again, though. Jack should be viewed as a canary in a coal mine. If he gets taken out, that should be seen as another indicator that the lethal gasses have reached dangerous levels.

14. Two separate issues:
1. I totally agree with what Cafferty is saying. He is hitting it right on the head, and I applaud his courage in positing the opposing viewpoint.

2. Journalism has devolved into "news and commentary," rather than objective reporting. It's gotten so bad, that many CNN talking heads will show a video clip, then say "it's a sad story." Well, DUH! Do I need the airhead to TELL me that, so I'll know HOW I'm supposed to feel? What about when they add "our hopes and prayers are with so-and-so?" It's that kind of stylistic crap that shapes our impressions of the news we hear.

My post was a commentary on #2 above. But I totally agree with your point. (I'm just "adding my own commentary." )
