133,700 Sign Petition In Less than 24 Hours to Stop "Naked, Partisan, Power Grab"

Washington, DC – In order to ram through Bush's extreme judicial nominees, Washington Republicans are threatening to eliminate a long-standing Senate rule that allows every member of the Senate a chance to address the concerns of their constituents by speaking on the Senate floor.

In response to this threat, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) emailed a petition to grassroots activists yesterday evening. The response was overwhelming. In less than 24 hours, 133,700 people signed the petition, signaling the importance of this issue for all Americans.

"This is not about partisan politics, this is about democracy," said Governor Howard Dean, DNC Chairman. "Washington Republicans want to give George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and their cronies on Capitol Hill unprecedented power by taking away the rights of U.S. Senators to represent their constituents. The American people will not allow Washington Republicans to break down the separation of powers with this naked, partisan, power grab."

ALSO:

The DNC delivered to Democrats in Congress more than 216,000 signatures on our petition to protect Social Security. The Democratic leadership was overwhelmed by the support Americans are showing them as they stand up to President Bush's risky scheme to privatize Social Security.
