Death of a Sales Pitch: They Said It
Fox News: Bush Has Lost Political Capital

Washington, DC – FoxNews.com is reporting that President George W. Bush has lost his "coveted political capital" as a result of increased opposition – from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers – to his plan to privatize Social Security.

Today's news comes just as Republican Senator Richard Shelby joins other Washington Republicans – including Senators Lindsay Graham, Chuck Hagel, and Charles Grassley – in openly criticizing Bush's plan which will cost trillions and cut benefits without addressing Social Security's solvency.

FAIR AND BALANCED ASSESSMENT
"President Bush and congressional Democrats have dueled daily over Social Security, a national saga that has cost the president coveted political capital and left some Republicans more than a bit squeamish."

SENATOR SHELBY: NO LOGIC TO BUSH PLAN
"The Bush administration has proposed a plan that would give people under 55 "ownership" of Social Security by placing part of workers' payroll taxes into privately managed retirement accounts. It's a move that could add several trillion dollars to the national debt, because the federal government would have to borrow to create the privatized accounts, Shelby said, ‘and I don't see the logic in that.'"

2. The FOX comments are pure spin.
It's to make them look 'fair and balanced' on an issue that is all but dead.

3. Chimpie doesn't know what to do with "capital"
He's squandered every amount of capital he's ever been handed in economic or foriegn policy, etc.

Why should this be any different?

DoSP: Bush Said It
"Personal Accounts Is Not The Permanent Fix"

Washington, DC – In an interview with local reporters this week, President George W. Bush publicly admitted that his plan to privatize Social Security does nothing to strengthen the program’s long term solvency. Though Democratic and Republican lawmakers have both criticized the President’s plan for not addressing solvency, this is the first time the President has conceded that fact.

WE COULDN'T AGREE MORE
"What the individual accounts won't do, Bush acknowledged, is solve Social Security's long-term funding shortfall. 'It's important for people to understand that personal accounts is not the permanent fix,' he said."

8. Maybe FOX is reading DU
Only a complete idiot would think privatizing Social Security is a good thing.

Maybe they don't want to be connected with the Village Idiot at some level.

9. how can shelby be correct about this:
he says

"...because the federal government would have to borrow to create the privatized accounts, Shelby said, ‘and I don't see the logic in that.'"

the feds should not have to borrow ANY money. for privatized accounts all the money should come from private citizens for their own accounts, so if they invest stupidly, only they will pay the price, not the taxpayers.........
