can be used to site example after example of how the media is not a "truth teller" for the people....

* coverage of Iraq truths out there...not shared

* coverage of "lobbyist in politics - not shared"

* ther are sooo many examples....

This could be a huge campaign issue.

2. One more thing
"Thank you for giving me the this time. Yeaaaahhh!"

Okay, just kidding. You are correct. That would be a deft way of handling it. There may even be better more recent examples of the things the media ignored though, esecially things ignored while they were covering "the scream." Bush's request for $40B more for Iraq might be good.

There is nothing for him to apologize for.

If I were advising Dean I'd let it rest until someone criticizes it.

Then I would suggest taking ownership of it, even joke about it.

Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 09:26 AM by HereSince1628
Dean supporters might take on the yell in a "I scream for Dean" sort of spirit at rally's.

Maybe Dean could use it in phrases like...

"Clark was paid $800,000 to lobby for a software company seeking to get a contract to help John Ashsroft to invade your privacy... to which I say, 'YEWWWWW!' Take back America!"

But I wouldn't apologize for something that wasn't wrong.

I'm not looking for a candidate with all the courage of a citizen of Lake Wobegon. We have a majority leader like that already, and look where its gotten us.

5. I think I getting ready to change my candidate.
Although I think Clark is the best, my second choice has always been Dean. Since Clark doesn't even appeare to be placing in the polls, I'd rather see Dean than Kerry become the candidate. It's still a while before the Texas primaries, but as you pointed out, the media is being very unfair to Dean. He will probably get my vote when he comes to Texas.

Just because it is the media at work doesnt mean
you can go whine about it. That's what Nixon did,
remember? The people themselves saw the speech
and had a strong reaction. Did you read what Trippi
wrote about it on the blog?

26. I read it -- Trippi blames the media... and so do I...so what is your
point...?

Nixon was a crook covering...I think the comaparison is not the same.

My point is, Dean needs to fight back...I think those words (modified) would resonate with the people and put us on a new direction of offense...not meek and mild Dr. Dean.

Thanks for your comments

35. Youre right, he does mention the media & I wd leave
that part out. I would say the gist of this...

Trippi:

Here’s the real story on Monday night – the one the press still hasn’t told.

I’ve been around campaigns for a long time. On most campaigns, if you come in third in Iowa with 18% and you go to the after party, you’re lucky to find 4 people there. Most every one by the time it’s over has left to find another party and another campaign.

But on Monday night Howard Dean walked in to the ballroom in Des Moines and there were 3500 people there. And the energy was higher than most victory parties I’ve been to.

The Governor looked out at the room and saw 3500 people who had come from all across the country because they believed in changing their country and he wanted them to know how proud he was of them and their efforts. And he wanted them to know that we’re going on no matter what.

He wasn’t thinking about the cameras. It was the people right in front of him who had done so much because they believe in a better America that he was speaking to.

41. I dont read him saying
he doesnt know where he was at.
The "not thinking about the cameras," you mean?
To me that just means he wasnt being phony,
wasnt playing to the cameras, but was concerned
with the people who had given so much for him
& needed bracing up. I think he can say that &
that wd touch peoples hearts. That's how he got
to the top in the first place--on feeling,
honest feeling. The media angle,
I've just seen that go sour every time. It
doesnt matter if its true---which it IS--it just
wont work with those people out there who wonder
what he was doing that night. He should just tell
them what was going on, simple and straightforward,
from the heart, while everybody's watching.

best one I've heard all morning.

Dean's campaign has done well in the past dealing with attacks from opponents. I would hope that they will be just a masterful in dealing with attacks from the media.

I decided this morning that CNN has chosen to become the new National Enquirer rather than purveyor of the news. Last time I will ever watch that whore factory.

31. That was different, if I recall.
That wasnt DK whining about what the media
were doing to *him,* was it. If Dean gets on
there & goes, "It's the media's fault," average
joe is going to go, "No, I saw you & you were pretty
hopped up, and that wasnt the media, that was you."

But if Dean puts it in the context of what happened
in that place that night, the 3500 supporters, him
wanting to cheer them up--read what Trippi said--
that wd start turning it around. My view: don't
blame the media.

40. K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple, stupid)
Trippi's explanation is short and makes complete sense, and it will 'ring true' with ordinary Americans. I would suggest that Dr. Dean go with it, rather than blaming the media. If he uses Trippi's explanation, most folks will buy it and move on. :)

It's not like the media will stop crucifying him if he says nothing. Dean really has nothing to lose by responding appropriately.
