Women & Social Security, Some Facts
From the Institute for Women's Policy Research, another Social Security Calculator and some facts:

As research by IWPR and others shows, the current Social Security program is a mainstay for women. Women are nearly 60 percent of all beneficiaries, including retirees, the disabled, and the survivors of deceased workers. Twenty-seven million women receive Social Security checks every month.

2. Transfer costs to the state
of course the women are the caretakers for their husbands when they get Alzheimers, Parkinsons and cancer etc. Sometimes a good portion of the savings goes to the husband's health care costs.

It would be interesting to see how many of the women then go on reduced survivor benefits. Their final days will likely be in a nursing home if they get a disabling illness. This is paid for with their cash assets, until the money runds out and then they go on Medicaid.
Reducing a woman's benefits would speed the track to Medicaid - something the admin is trying to turn over to the states.

If all men do not throw a fit about this I would suggest they look for loving caretakers elsewhere!

3. Yes, everyone forgets that women have always been the caretakers
and done free labor all their lives (the kids, the sick, the dying hubby, the retired hubby who fishes while his wife cleans house and gets dinner ready) plus often worked a paying job as well. And in the end we don't get paid for any of it -- in fact, we get thrown away like used Kleenex.
