Hillary Under Attack
By Greg Sargent
Wannabe Swift Boaters seek to stop her now.

Intelligencer: February 714, 2005

New PAC Attack Tries to Sink U.S.S. Hillary
Wannabe Swift Boaters seek to stop her now.
Arthur Finkelstein, the political guru who helped create George Pataki, now wants to Swift Boat-ize Hillary Clinton. Senior New York Republicans say hes creating a political action committee called Stop Her Nowall you need is the pronoun with this crowd, apparentlywhich will attempt to raise more than $10 million nationwide to use against Her during Her 2006 reelection campaign. The PAC will bloody her up long before her presidential run, vows a top state Republican, adding the model is indeed the Swift Boat Vets. Stop Her Now will bludgeon Clinton with ads, whether or not the New York GOP has found a candidate to take her on, which is looking increasingly difficult. Jeanine Pirro, the sex-crime-avenging Westchester D.A., is reportedly considering it. But Pirro aides have whispered that she would rather run for attorney general. Still, one senior GOPer says that some Republicans are urging a Hillary challenge instead, arguing that Pirros convicted-tax-evader husband, Al Pirro, makes it tougher for her to replace the squeaky-clean Eliot Spitzer (and Hillary is saddled with Bills past).

1. Wow, they really are scared of Hillary
I hope they try it-she's not a wimp like Kerry, and will not make the same mistakes he did in dealing with these types of attacks.

25. Hey, we are also afraid of Hillary
The last thing we need is that pandering neolib as our nominee in 2008.

Hillary will get attacked by the Right, as would any Democratic candidate, but she will also get attacked by the Left, and deservedly so!

5. "Swiftboating" is the new model of GOP/media smears.
They can take down anyone they want with it- all they have to do is make shit up, while the media repeats it as fact...

...as long as the DEM response is to sit on their hands and say "thats not fair"- it will continue to work.

11. The 14th feature of fascism:
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a
complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns
against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of
legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries,
and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their
judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

34. We are in so deep.
Every single sign of fascism fits the US.

Maybe Hillary should set up a pac too. I'm willing to bet that outside of DU (and a few people at DU) there are people who like her and don't want to see her politically disemboweled and replaced by some rightwing nut republican.

The GOP is going after one of strongest people in one of the bluer states...we gotta stop them.

17. Hardly "new"
They've been doing this forever. The Swift Boats was just a new low in what they would stoop to lie about.

"At neither end of the ideological spectrum did respect for civility of discourse restrain the Roosevelt-haters. The Communist leader Earl Browder said that FDR was "carrying out more thoroughly and brutally than even Hoover the capitalist attack against the masses," and the domestic fascist William Dudley Pelley called the President the "lowest form of human worm - according to Gentile standards." One critic accused him of "blathering platitudes like a parson on vacation." and another wrote to him savagely, "If you were a good honest man, Jesus Christ would not have crippled you." It was in a formal address to the Chicago Bar Association, not in a harangue to an extremist rally, that a United States Senator from Minnesota did not hesitate to liken Roosevelt to the beast of the Apocalypse," "who set his slimy mark on everything."<4>

Roosevelt, his critics maintained, had shown himself to be a man without principles. Herbert Hoover called him a "chameleon on plaid," while H. L. Mencken said, "If he became convinced tomorrow that coming out for cannibalism would get him the votes he so sorely needs, he would begin fattening a missionary in the White House backyard come Wednesday." The Sage of Baltimore declared, "I am advocating making him king in order that we may behead him in case he goes too far beyond the limits of the endurable."<5>

21. But has past media repeatedly made up stuff on the same level?...
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 12:38 AM by Dr Fate
...as the swift-boat stuff, the WMDs, the events leading up to the Clinton impeachment, etc?...

It seems the difference is that the media is repeating GOP lies as fact on level like never before...

If its not new, then howcome the DEMS dont see it comming? DEMS may as well expect anything to be said and "reported" about them...

24. Come out for cannibalism?
I'd say that's pretty caustic. Harry Truman said all you have to do is ready the WSJ and you can see what they're planning on doing to you.

So no, it isn't new. It's new to US though and I think that hurts because people over-react. Hate radio and Fox is new, that has hurt alot.

I do think the Dems see it coming. "the most lying, crooked bunch" Of course they see it coming. Kerry said they'd knocked down the swift boats twice last year, and they had. He'd been through it before and expected it to run the same course it had before. He said they had more backing this time and he was surprised when it came back the third time. But he thought he'd already knocked it down and so they didn't respond as quickly. I also don't think he ever dreamed they'd go so far on his purple hearts and medals. It still astonishes me that people in this country attacked a war veteran in a time of war while worshipping a guy who avoided the draft and went awol.

I also think Democrats helped keep that alive by going into a tailspin and freaking out over why Kerry hadn't responded. I don't know why every single Democrat didn't just repeat what had already been said instead of acting like it was new and needed answering. There were people right here who joined in the questioning about that form and maybe there was something to hide and all the rest. You would never find Republicans doing that. When the media smells a controversy, they're going to exploit it. And Democrats play right into that far too often.

22. And Hillary's camp is doing... ? Do I hear crickets chirping?
She's gonna leave ANYTHING to chance? I hope to God not. I mean, HELLO! Do we learn ANYTHING from the recent past? Do we understand pre-emptive strikes? How about a down-n-dirty, no-holds-barred campaign to "soften up" any and all republi-CONS? They had a wolves breathing down your neck commercial. How about some foxes - or maybe even wolves - "guarding" the hen house?

8. Let's see
Travelgate (debunked)
The condom-covered christmas tree (heresay)
Defending the "Black Panthers" in college (never happened)
The waitress who wasn't tipped (where is she now? probably on welfare working as a greeter for Wal-Mart)
What's-his-name (can't think of it right now) who committed suicide in a way that even Ken Starr couldn't link to her.
The Gold-Star Mothers lie (Right-wingers will not accept even a notarized letter absolving Hillary of that - they'll still spread the lie)

Plenty more bullshi_ for them to rehash as "truth".

Oh, don't forget how many "disgruntled" staffers (who never even met her once) will be making the talk-show/commercial circuit.

14. Its true to point- I would be more likely to back her up...
...if I saw the GOP/media beating on her- just to spite them.

The real issue is whether that will be enough to for her to win the day...

"Swiftboating" is awfully effective on the "swing voters"- and somthing tells me DEMS still havent learned how to counteract Swiftboating.

23. Hillary has a top-notch political operation--she won't let it happen
She learned from her husband. Say what you want about Bill Clinton, but when he was getting attacked by the Gingrich Klan, Clinton never let an attack go unanswered. He fought back blow-for-blow, which is why he survived politically, unlike Kerry. Hillary's campaign braintrust is top-notch, and Hillary has lived through countless political attacks on Bill and herself. She will handle herself.

Our party should be called the Defenseocrats, we almost never attack, and are always on the defensive.

When will see an article about some Democrats starting a PAC to take down Tom DeLay or Arnold or Rudy or some other Republicans?

Why can't our party get its act together and go on the attack?
