Wellstone memorial, take 2
Lots of threads about Dean's speech on Monday night, aren't there? I finally saw the clip on the Daily Show and it occurred to me that this is just like what happened after the Wellstone memorial. Remember what happened there? The only difference I see is that Gov. Dean's demeanor really was appropriate in the context of a political rally with hundreds of hard-working supporters. The right wing would love us all to propagate this "out-of-control" theme. They got away with it once, but now we should be onto them. Don't give them the satisfaction, no matter what candidate you support. We shouldn't be doing their work for them--they're good enough at it all by themselves.

1. What was "not appropriate" about Wellstone's memorial?
Were you there? Did you see everyone's speech?

I witnessed it first-hand, and there was NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING INAPPROPRIATE at that memorial. Paul Wellstone was not only a Senator, but a social activist who was not afraid to stand up for what he believed in, even if it meant getting arrested.

If only half of our candidates had the balls that Paul Wellstone had, we wouldn't be bitching about whether it's okay for "some" people to go without health coverage in the richest country in the world.

2. Didn't mean it wasn't
I was able to see only a small part, but I have no doubt that there was nothing wrong with it. Please understand my point: We believe the Wellstone memorial was appropriate, and the Dean speech was even MORE appropriate because it was by definition a political event.

Dean Iowa speech to Wellstone memorial service. I've seen it come up a couple times and it really gets me "angry." I was at Williams Arena and felt Rick Kahn did nothing inappropriate. Neither do I think the Dean scream was inappropriate. But it is a disservice to Rick Kahn and the Wellstone legacy to draw this comparison. I wish Dean and his supporters would stop using Wellstone as a crutch.

4. No disrespect to Wellstone
Excuse me, but my whole point here, which may not be getting through, is that the other side wants to use this slimy tactic against another Democrat and we shouldn't fall for it. I doubt that Paul Wellstone would want that. And by the way, I've always been sorry that I don't live in Minnesota anymore and couldn't vote and work for Wellstone.
