Making Political Hay into Political Gold!
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=533&ncid=533&e=16&u=/ap/20050201/ap_on_re_us/students_first_amendment

Have you guys seen this about students not caring about the First Amendment? This gives us the PERFECT opportunity to open a new front against the conservative onslaught by giving them a dose of their own medicine.

We should be lobbying school boards as strongly as the Right does about teaching Creationism and banning any thought of Evolution.

We should be lobbying nationally to "post the (10) Bill of Rights in our schools, not the 10 Commandments".

We should be using this as a case in point to support the need for reform of our educational system.

This could really be a political gold mine, people.

1. The minds of DUers never cease to amaze me - excellent point!
It would absolutely be better for our country for our citizens to know our Constitution.

What a concept.

2. I agree
In the late 1700s the people thought that the Secretary of the Treasury, Benjamin Franklin, was causing inflation of the dollar. An angry mob grabbed their torches and pitchforks and marched to his house to burn it down. He was not there. His wife stood in the doorway with a gun and eventually the mob dispersed, house intact.

Now not only do our citizens not march on Washington save for the most extremist issue, many don’t even care about free speech. I have trouble even understanding how one person can be dismissive of their own right, much less one in three as the article states.

This is both a major failure of our government, and a major threat to he continuation of this republic. I do not think it should be abused to make political issue with our Republican friends. Instead I think we need to take this threat for what it is. If we are serious about Democracy we as the defenders of social justice need exercise our rights and petition our government.

Everyone who reads this should send a letter to their state and federal legislatures. As well as their states Secretary of Education and Governors. Maybe even to the Bush administration. We could use it as political gold as Tamyrlin79 suggests. Republicans will be receptive to properly worded letters that exploit their ideology. Their overuse and misuse of ‘freedom”. They will not allow themselves to ignore this issue.
