U.S. Embassy in Baghdad Hit; Two Killed

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A rocket or mortar hit the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad late Saturday on the eve of Iraq (news - web sites)'s landmark elections, killing two people and wounding four, a U.S. Embassy official said.

One round fell into the Embassy's compound in the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. military said an explosion at the site was being investigated.

Embassy spokesman Bob Callahan confirmed the embassy had been hit in an attack and said there appeared to have been casualties, but could give no details.

The second official then confirmed that two had been killed and four injured.

How will the cheerleaders respond? Will they say it'll all be over after the election? Will Scarborough say again that he "doesn't give a damn" whether the Sunni's participate or accept the election?

1. So these dozen or so "embassy" installations that we're building for
ourselves, I'm thinking that they're gonna get pockmarked from time to time:eyes:

2. the bitter enders are getting desperate
they couldn't stop the election, so they've resorted to attacking Americans.

3. Americans have been attacked all along, though.
A hit inside the green zone is quite significant, it seems to me. Definitely a signal of intimidation re: the election but also a show of their own ability to attack, even where it's supposedly "safe" (or "heavily guarded").

4. Maybe I'm wrong
Maj. Gen. Sheppard and Anderson Cooper are saying it's not a big deal or a surprise, but fairly "routine."

5. Iraqi patriots, fighting against a puppet government?
So many ways to look at the invasion and occupation.
