Are you a proud "BlueNeck?" See this...
So the freepers thought they could insult us by calling us "BlueNecks" (as opposed to "RedNecks") If you are proud to be "Blue" then check out the gear that DUer Sapphocat has made available to us.

4. . . . . and I'm sure they'll try to make something out of that . . .
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 10:40 AM by Jack Rabbit
EDITED for typing

Nevertheless, they cannot make us ashamed of who we are. We are the people who oppose and will resist Bush. We are the people who refuse to believe his lies, no matter how often he repeats them. We are the people who know that Bush's brand of secret government is antithetical to democratic principles. We are the people who call torture not by euphemisms like abuse or aggressive interrogation methods but call it instead war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Perhaps a blueneck is an ostrich, but when it comes to the evils of neoconservatism, we aren't the ones with our heads in the sand.

8. Well said...
I personally like the term... most especially because it was originally devised by the freepers as a derogatory name for Dems/liberals.

2. That caught on fast

Actually, I object to the term redneck being used as a pejorative. The origin of the word is from people whose necks were sunburned from working on farms. Given that, the term redneck is honorable; it would be improper to describe Mr. Bush and most corporate CEOs, who do no honest work at all, as rednecks.

6. CEO Rednecks "Earned" From Outdoor Work
putting on Golf Courses. Honorable, maybe not, but sunburn on the back of the neck is a sure giveaway of all stoop labor.

9. Nope, you're wrong about the origin of the term "redneck"
"The origins of this term are Scottish and refer to supporters of the National Covenant and The Solemn League and Covenant, or "Covenanters", largely Lowland Presbyterians, many of whom would flee Scotland for Ulster (Northern Ireland) during persecutions by the British Crown. The Covenanters of 1638 and 1641 signed the documents that stated that Scotland desired the Presbyterian form of church government and would not accept the Church of England as its official state church.

Many Covenanters signed in their own blood and wore red pieces of cloth around their necks as distinctive insignia; hence the term "Red neck", which became slang for a Scottish dissenter*. One Scottish immigrant, interviewed by the author, remembered a Presbyterian minister, one Dr. Coulter, in Glasgow in the 1940's wearing a red clerical collar -- is this symbolic of the "rednecks"?

Since many Ulster-Scottish settlers in America (especially the South) were Presbyterian, the term was applied to them, and then, later, their Southern descendants. One of the earliest examples of its use comes from 1830, when an author noted that "red-neck" was a "name bestowed upon the Presbyterians." It makes you wonder if the originators of the ever-present "redneck" joke are aware of the term’s origins?"

10. Thank you for the information
Mine came from television interview with a Mississippi farmer who also happened to be mayor of the local town. I'm quoting from memory. I believe it was televised in the early seventies.

Even so, a person fleeing persecution is more honorable than than his oppressors. That is true even if his descendants become oppressors or supporters of other tyrants themselves, as is the case here.

3. Well if a blueneck is the exact opposite of a redneck
I'll wear that badge proudly. A blueneck is articulate, well-spoken, educated. A blueneck doesn't marry their cousin, the family tree actually has branches instead of a telephone pole to chart the generations. We like beer but can be seen ordering a nice bottle of wine for our meal. A blueneck understands complex issues, likes well founded discussions, and votes for the good of a country.

We might like NASCAR but will be equally at home at a good lecture, concert or protest march. A blueneck is an open and friendly person, hates discrimination of any kind, and prefers not to pre-judge a person on race, gender and personal lifestyle. Bluenecks love freedom, the USA, Mom, apple pie, support the military and hate self-important, hypocritical, Jesus-freaks who try to force their belief system of hate and fear down anyone's throat. A blueneck can recognize fraud, whether in the White House or in the voting booth and will work like hell to get rid of both. And finally, a blueneck doesn't accept criticism from anyone on the repuke side of the equation as anything but biased, uninformed and self-serving.

I'm a blueneck - oh, yeah, I am definitely a blueneck. What a nice compliment. Thank you very much.

5. Glad you see it that way and what a nice post...
For those of us who like stuff like taking what is meant to be an insult and turning it around to our advantage, then this is something that we can use. For those who don't feel that way....well...let us have our fun - OK?

I am going to enjoy wearing my button and t-shirt and explaining what a "BlueNeck" is to inquiring minds.

Oh, and blueneck ostriches and redneck farmworkers aside, I think the freepers have just complimented us with this new name. As with anything, it all depends on how you look at it. This name was not given to us by Democrats but by rightwingers seeking to insult us, so it is THEIR take on redneck being an insult - not ours. :)
