This should be "Gen Smedley D. Butler Day" instead of Inauguration Day
Our history teachers have already removed E V Debs pretty much from high school history books so I don't feel amazed that absolutely NO MENTION ever gets made of USMC Gen. Smedley D. Butler, who single-handedly saved the country from fascists in the 1930's by whistleblowing to Congress on the "Plot to Overthrow FDR"

see http://www.ihffilm.com/r547.html

The book by Jules Archer, "The Plot to Seize the White House" is difficult to find, and expensive to boot.

I just wish Mel Gibson and/or Michael Moore would do a dramatization of this true hero, what I would call America's "Braveheart" and show the neocon/neofascists for who they really are !

Is Hollywood up to the task, or is just more 'disinformation' for the Bush regime forthcoming ?

1. Funny thing about Smedley Butler...
Apparently, US Marine recruits are regaled with tales of Gen. Butler's heroism in boot camp. After all, the man was one of the most decorated Marines in the history of the Corps, receiving the Medal of Honor not just once, but twice.

However, they seem to leave out all the stuff about what Butler did and said AFTER he retired from the Marines.

Mike Hoffman, co-founder of IVAW and a former Marine told me about this, and how he learned the TRUE story of Smedley Butler in Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States.

THE PLOT TO OVERTHROW FDR
Smedley D. Butler

"In 1932, while many Americans felt it was the way out of the Depression, a powerful group of financiers and industrialists saw the New Deal as a threat.
It was this group's plan to either overthrow the newly-elected president or force their agenda on him. They intended to use a paramilitary organization of disgruntled WWI veterans inspired by Marine General Smedley D. Butler to coerce the government. But Butler, discovering the details of the conspiracy, blew the whistle, triggering a Congressional investigation. Leading scholars, historians and government officials reveal the details of one of the most bizarre schemes in American history."
