Falwell: NOW= "Nat'l Order of Witches"
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FEMINISTS_TOUGH_TIMES?SITE=TXSAE&SECTION=US&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

NEW YORK (AP) -- America's feminist leaders and their critics agree on at least one current political fact: These are daunting times for the women's movement as it braces for another term of an administration it desperately wanted to topple.

"The next four years are going to be tough, so we must be tougher," National Organization for Women president Kim Gandy recently told supporters. "Our health, our rights, and our democracy are teetering on the brink."

NOW, the Feminist Majority Foundation and numerous like-minded groups campaigned zealously against President Bush, contending that his economic agenda would inflict disproportionate harm on women and that his potential judicial appointments could jeopardize abortion rights

Many of the conservative activists and organizations that cheered the GOP triumph - and now claim expanded influence in Washington - are stridently anti-feminist. The Rev. Jerry Falwell, for example, recently referred to NOW as "The National Order of Witches"

2. That's nothing compared to Pat Robertson's definition of feminism
"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians."

Well, since I've got this attractive and manly (in a hetero sort of way) new grill, anyone want a soggy grilled cheese sandwich? If you want something drier, you'll have to go talk to the lesbians over there.

79. PTL club= Pharisees Taking Lucre.
WE listen to Falwell, Robertson, Phelps--ad nauseum, because it's important to know what patriotic Americans, and those of sincere faith, are up against.

But the real problem is the Bush administration which welcomes the "hypocrites and false profits" into our government only to use them for nefarious and earthly purposes.

In so doing, Bush denigrates both religion and government.

Every message Christ left to us is apparently lost or perverted by all of the above mentioned individuals and entities.

31. So true, and what I find most revealing in that description
is the end of it: "become lesbians." That, of course is what Robertson and his ilk are most afraidd of, and with good reason. What sane, self-respecting woman would want a man who harbors such hatred for women? For men like him, women must be dominated or we will reject men. Deep down, he must know that men with his views do not deserve the love of women.

But this is a relatively new twist, historically. The norm has been to accuse uppity women of promiscuity, not lesbianism. This just goes to show how threatened these men really feel.

Thank God not all men are like this!

That's why Falwell and Robertson are so scared. If most men and most women are left alone to live their lives, people(?) like Falwell and Robertson will be all alone.

Tough luck, hate-mongers of the world. Most of us will continue to lead happy productive lives ignoring your bizarre spew. We're not going to send you any money either.

The lady in Texas who drowned all of her kids was extremely fundamentalist.

Susan Smith who sent her car into the river while her helpless children sat strapped in their car seats in the back, her step daddy wsa head of her state's Christian Coalition.

108. Texas mom that cut off baby's arms was, too..
The one that said God told her the night before to kill the baby...she had told this to the father, also, and the father ignored it and went to work the next day...leaving her home alone with the baby.

BTW, he is regaining custody of the other 2 kids..

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D87HKLG80.html

The surviving daughters of a woman accused of killing her 10-month-old baby by cutting off her arms could be returned to the custody of their father.

A tentative agreement was reached Monday to return the girls to their father, John Schlosser, but the agreement requires a judge's approval, The Dallas Morning News reported in its online edition Monday night.

But John Schlosser and his attorney, Howard Shapiro, met with Child Protective Services officials and lawyers Monday morning. They agreed that the girls should be placed in their father's care if his sister, who lives in New York, agrees to move to Texas to help with the transition, said attorneys involved with the case. Shapiro declined to name the sister, but said she plans to fly to Texas by early next week

According to court records, the father began counseling last month and is scheduled to start parenting classes this month. He has attended weekly visitations with his children and undergone a psychological evaluation.

8. So What
I have been disenchanted with NOW and their ilk for some time now. They may have been something once, but seemed to have lost focus. They have hi stoically ignored many of the day in day out issues of working class women and women of color in favor of things that get them on the news. This is not to say that the RW crazies are just and fair to women. Falwell is about as regressive as you get. Its just that NOW, for me at least, lost much of its luster long ago.

I was a member, but the national leadership was not interested in anything but their agenda. Us rank and file types did not get the big picture (paraphrase from a form letter I got back). Figured that they did not need my time or money after that.

Since then I have focused on local impacts. Mentoring, support groups, schools, neighborhood organizations.

The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

87. Remember shrub's "do you have blacks here?" question...
When he was visiting Brazil a few years ago he asked one of the officials there "do you have blacks here, too"...couldn't remember the country off-hand but googling brought this up:

http://www.squall.co.uk/squall.cfm/ses/sq=2002061401/ct=1

He's dropped some real goofies in his short time as US president, but George W Bush came up with the worst so far whilst visiting Brazil in May. In conversation with Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the 71 year old president of Brazil, Bush blurted: "Do you have blacks here too?".

An embarrassing silence was punctuated by Condolezza Rice, the black US National Security Advisor, who hastily chimed in to the rescue by telling Bush that Brazil had a higher black population than any country outside Africa. Spared the necessity of having to give Bush's dumb question an answer, Cardoso later described the US president as "still in training".

Every person who votes republican for any office empowers and condones Falwell and by their vote becomes a vital Falwell supporter. The democratic party should educate the public to the fact that three of the most powerful republican leaders in the country are Falwell, Dobson, and Robertson and that every vote for a republican is a vote to support these men and their beliefs.

28. I am really tired of this...
I and many of "us" have been discounting these people for decades when they do this kind of crap. I've poo-poo'ed them, ignored them, waved them asided and discounted them.

Now, I'm tired of it. I am tired of letting them get away with this kind of stuff. This is verbal abuse. This is abuse of power. This is unchristian-like behavior. This is bullying. This is wrong and immoral behavior.

And I, for one, am feeling the need to stand up against this kind of abuse that they chose to heap upon any group that they don't like.

I am not now nor have I ever been a member of NOW. I have never been a strident feminist. Never burned a bra even though I came of age in that era.

But I sure as heck do appreciate the work of those who did - those women and men who were and are committed to full rights, equality and full self-expression for all members of society regardless of gender (or color or religion or physical abilities or country-of-orign or intellectual capapcity or any other characteristic). Many people have gone out on a limb and suffered persecution to secure the rights of others.

And you know what, it's just no longer right or okay for me to disregard and ignore the bullies like Fallwell, Robertson and Dobson. I'm writing Fallwell a letter TODAY reprimanding him for his behavior.

These people are acting like schoolyard bullies. The election has emboldened them and they are becoming more agressive in their bullying. I can't stand for it.

So, what to do??? I've never been a teacher, nor have I raised any children so I don't really know how to deal with them? Does anyone have any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is to use the tool of SHAME - they are shameless in their behavior so all I can think of is to attempt to shame them into behaving better. (Not that I really think my single letter will have much effect... ) I am open to the ideas of others who may have insight as to how to begin to deal with these folks. We have been letting them get away with this stuff for far too long now.

42. The democratic party needs to make people understand that
Falwell, Dobson, Robertson, and others of their evil ilk are among the most powerful republicans in the country and that anyone who votes republican empowers and supports these people. Every republican vote is vital to the power these Reich wing fundamentalist hate mongers wield.

Moderate republican voters have for years thought of these people as somewhat crazy but essentially harmless and have welcomed their support to become the majority party. Now those moderate republicans need to be made to realize that they have made a mistake in tolerating and condoning the Reich wing fundamentalist hate. The moderate republicans also need to be urged to either retake control of their party or leave it.

57. Every Witch I have ever known has been a kind person.
I can't say that of Christians.

Back in the 50's "witch" used to conjur up images of a haggard, green wart-covered hag. These days the popular image of a Witch is a young, sexy 20-something. (Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch)

59. but that's not a real witch
we need to get a Wiccan on a sitcom. Gay people are much more accepted now (yes, yes, still a long way to go, but still) because they are on sitcoms. If we can get a Wiccan on a sitcom, then they will be accepted into the mainstream.

64. I know it's not a "real" witch.
But the frame that Fallwell is trying to envoke isn't going to work because the publics perception of witches isn't what it used to be in the 50s.

I'd love to see a real pagan in a mainstream sitcom.

62. Break out the Burkas (not quite)
We've been converted

This is a tremendous avenue for using framing to demonstrate the fact that Muslims (who fear women's rights more than we do) are slowly winning the "battle of cultures" that many on the right feel that we're in. The point of this battle is to have their culture begin to resemble ours in terms of tolerance and freedom, not the other way around.

It's all about winning the arguments. And turning the tables on idiots like Falwell by using arguments like this is highly effective. They don't hear this stuff, and unfortunately, people who use these arguments are kept far from cable news studios...

63. Liberals to NeoCons = Jews to Nazis?
This should be a verbal question on the SAT.

I've recently become much more aware of this country's trend towards embracing fascism, thanks to the neo-cons. They need a scapegoat to blame all of America's woes. Are liberals going to serve that purpose? They already blame liberals for everything now. So after 2012, after Jeb Bush wins his second cheated election on secret republican software, are liberals going to be the ones rounded up for "re-education" camps?

Glad to have you with us. IMHO, it's our job to make sure liberals aren't rounded up for "re-education camps" or otherwise disenfranchised, because it won't take until 2012 for that to start happening. We have to keep informed and keep getting the message out to the masses. DU is a good place to do both!

75. Are Wiccans entitled to "faith based funds"
If their local covens start up community and social service programs, based on Wiccan teachings, practicing the "old religion", would they then qualify for Bush's "faith based funds"?

Or is the "faith based" think only for SOME faiths? I mean, is the Federal Government making judgment calls that some religions are legitimate and others are not? That would seem to run contrary to the 1st Amendment, no?

82. Falwell quote: "blow them all away in the name of the Lord."
That has to be my favorite one. Found a nice Jesus/Falwell contrast on this site:

http://www.whtt.org/whtt.shtml?articles/Mongr.htm

Jesus said (Matthew 5)

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Falwell said (speaking of Muslims):

I'd rather be killing them over there than fighting them over here.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:

Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

Jerry Falwell said:

But you've got to kill the terrorists before the killing stops. And I'm for the President to chase them all over the world. If it takes 10 years, blow them all away in the name of the Lord.

The Lord Jesus said:

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An EYE FOR AN EYE, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, do not resist evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Jerry Falwell said:

Well, when they kill my family and blow those towers down...

Jesus Said:

I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it (either good or evil) unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (Our paraphrase of the last half of Matthew, Chapter 25.)

85. Not yet; but we are working on it.
 My neck of the woods has a food and clothing bank, a fund to help people get back on their feet, a free ordination program requiring community service, and volunteer days for service projects. Our clergy are unpaid and donations and fund raisers rarely cover the cost of the newsletter; much less supplies.

So far the UU church we are under hasn't recieved any faith based money; but several people are working on grants.

We can't even afford to be hopeful until the Bush fascism ends.

88. Repukes are not fond of us UU'ers
At all...our repuke TX treasurer Strayhorn tried to deny one local UU church tax exempt status a few yrs ago--because, in her words, the congregration didn't have "one single belief". She was forced to back down after it made the news and attorneys stepped in.
So I can just imagine the repukes reaction to handing out faith based $$ to UU's and Wiccans.

99. I was married by a UU minister - he agreed to preside over a secular
wedding ceremony. He was totally cool - he agreed to conduct the ceremony with no reference to god or gods.

He let my wife and I pick the passages, and his pick list included writings of Plato and Bertrand Russell.

Anyway, that UU minister went on to do Bruce Springsteen's wedding about a year after he conducted our wedding. It was surreal to show people our wedding photos and then show them the pictures from People Magazine and see the same guy presiding over the ceremonies. It felt like a brush with celebrity...

94. This is appalling!
Falwell isn't referring to present age Wiccans here, but he's referring to the scenario of the Middle Ages when witches were burned at the stake.

That's a pretty violent statement coming from a "Christian" who is supposed to be showing a good example. What a fuckup.:freak:

Back in those times some women were called witches because they used herbs for various ailments and administered herbs for abortion. The "church" didn't like this and burned these women at the stake. A lot of the abortion was due to rape, even the fundies of that age believed incest was acceptable because women and children were considered chattel.

Falwell is reminiscent of the church of old when Martin Luther (NOT Martin Luther King Jr.) started the reformation of the church. Martin Luther was against the priests taking money from believers, because the priests made it a requirement in order be able to go to heaven so the church raked in all the money from these desperate unknowing people.

Sounds like the lying Falwell following suit of the old church, money is his God.

And sounds like there needs to be another reformation because the fundies are getting really kooky and outspoken since the new "faith based" movement of the GOP.

I think Falwell is also referring to abortion with his statement. He needs to keep his nose out of other people's business. Women are not chattel, and you cannot control another person.

This is why we need to preserve the separation of Church and State because of freaks like him and Robertson, and we need to get the GOP out of office.

:nuke:

Hell, send it around to LA Times, Wash Post, and any other good ones you can suggest.

Make it a big deal. I saw some superb points made by people here. And maybe one person telling the truth about Fallwell would get ignored, but I wonder what would happen if a LARGE NUMBER of people signed their names, or mailed separately, to the Times??

Who knows, It might get as much attention as the March for Women's Lives, over a million people that barely got any media attention.

Sorry for that moment of cynicism--but seriously, if anyone would be interested in collaborating on a letter/editorial peice to NYT, respond here or PM me.
