"Dems Ask McAuliffe to Remain Party Chair"--What do you think about this?
"WASHINGTON (AP) - Senior Democrats are trying to persuade national Chairman Terry McAuliffe to continue his service as party chairman, especially if none of the current candidates gains momentum in the race to replace him.

About a half-dozen candidates are in the race and a couple of others are considering a run for the position. It will be filled in February at the Democratic National Committee's winter meetings.

McAuliffe met privately Wednesday with several Democratic senators on Capitol Hill, and was asked again to consider serving for another year or two, Democrats say. McAuliffe's response was not immediately known, but he has been cool to such overtures in the past.

Democratic senators reportedly at the meeting included Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and Charles Schumer of New York."

1. I promise to leave the Democratic Party if it happens.
The man has presided over 3 straight election-year setbacks. And we're not getting anything from him other than "Stay the course". If anything, he keeps calling for more movement to the right. Fuck him.

59. It's our party's fault for letting them get away with it.
Why not retaliate by stealing a few of our own? Why not at least call the pukes out on it and hold them accountable.

Our party can't control what others do, only what it does, and what it has done is pathetic.

I think Dean's an excellent administrator though.

I didn't like the fact that in order to run for prez, Dean reversed his positions on abortion and such. I must say my opinion of him has improved considerably since the primaries ended though.

He was one of the best surrogates we had by far.

What we're seeing is the party bosses arguing behind the scenes about whether to keep the DLC in power or run the risk of having a more progressive Dem end up as chair.

McAuliffe is a 'darling' of Clinton. Need we say more?

to keep the status quo! Change is bad? Well, the status quo is making us IRRELEVANT!

McAuliffe again, or a "go right guy" like Roemer, will mean bye-bye for me to the Dems.

My own hypothesis is, they have a handpicked guy they are holding in the wings who will emerge later and take the prize.

(Geez, that sounds a lot like Kerry in the primaries! Heheheheh!)

34. I want the party to turn sharply left. I want a new progressive movement
in this country.

We know we can't win by being Republican light. We learned that in 2002 and now in 2004. I don't want two parties competing for the middle-right vote.

I want a progressive movement put in place like the conservatives did with Reagan. I want us to build it from now until we can win with it.

I will not support a party that is center right.

45. You're already supporting a party that is center-right
If you voted Democratic in 1992-2004, especially for President, you were supporting a party that is center-right. It only appears that they are anywhere close to left because they are contrasted with the reactionary-right Republicans.

We have no center party in this country anymore, and we NEVER had a left party -- at least not one that succeeded on the national stage.

36. Compared to some of the other possibilities...
he's the best of a bad lot.

I'm not talking about Howard Dean, of course, but the Even Bayh's and the Tim Roemer's from the state where Democrats are shot on sight.

As much as I believe Dean deserves to be DNC Chair, I think he can be more effective as an independent, progressive voice through Democracy for America. I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if he didn't get the job.

A huge-huge-HUGE thing to remember is that the Democratic Party used to be about the grassroots, and we've gotten away from that. The person who holds the title of DNC Chair can do little to effect the troops on the ground. That much is up to us and to our local party organizations.

But, it's always been my feeling that McAuliffe is simply bad at what he does. He reeks of blind partisanship and spin. (As do most political operatives.) But, he's in the foremost position that demands likeablility, straightforwardness and persuasiveness. He doesn't have any of those qualities.

44. Actually, I don't find it all that surprising
I've given up on the national Democratic Party. They've proven beyond a shred of doubt that they are interested primarily in being a big-business party, a status-quo party -- just one that operates a tad less ruthlessly toward the "common folk" as the Republicans do.

The DNC has the opportunity to really shake things up and change course by embracing someone like Howard Dean as party chair. But they won't do that, precisely because the LAST thing they really want is to shake things up or change course.

I've given up on nearly the whole lot of them. Of course, there are still several Democratic elected officials who still recognize the importance of standing up for what they believe and representing people over big business, but they're all resigned to permanent backbencher status. The people calling the shots have no interest in change or reform -- they only care about entrenching their own position for personal power and fame.

Getting Terry "I never met a corporate contributor I didn't bow before" McAuliffe to stay on would be a clear signal of their intention to remain on this course.

51. He is supposed to excel at raising Corporate cash
Does that tell you anything about where the party Democrats see their bread buttered? Dean proved that corporate cash wasn't necessary - if the voters felt they had something worth donating $ to. And there is the catch--you can't serve two masters if their interests collide--thus it was necessary to insure the Dean option wasn't a choice.

What Democrat with Republican-lit policies is going to inspire a populous campaign?

66. Why would they hate Terry?
After all, in his 2 terms, he has handed them seats on the national and state levels to an unprecedented degree. Hell, they ought to give him a medal!

I mean, it takes real talent to outraise your opposition and then squander those funds on a losing effort that ultimately removes your party from national power in both branches. And that on top of having lost seats nationally and in the states in every single previous election of your terms. Guess he wanted to go out with a bang.

Hmmm...think McAuliffe could be a MOLE?
