Ariz. 'first true test' for Dems
So much for front-runners. The top two in Iowa were reduced to stragglers within hours Monday night in a finish completely topsy-turvy from predictions of just 10 days ago.
Pay attention, Arizona. It could happen again. The state's Democrats have exactly two weeks to figure out what kind of jolt, fatal or energizing, they may give the race for their party's presidential nomination.
The shocking victory by Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and close second place by Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina "just goes to show it's a wide-open race," said Paul Hegarty, executive director of the Arizona Democratic Party. "That makes Arizona all the more important" when party members vote Feb. 3 in their earliest primary ever.
New Hampshire's election next Tuesday is not limited to Democrats, so Arizona's primary a week later will be "the first true test" of candidates' strength, Hegarty said.
