Anyone know what committee assignments Obama might get?
If the Democrats are smart (which is a big stretch), they'll put him on a wide variety of very important committees, such as the Foreign Relations, Judiciary, HealthLaborandEducation, etc. This way, he can have a high profile career in the Senate and learn quite a lot about many important issues, so he will be very well prepared for his eventual run for the Presidency. If he was on Judiciary, he'd be able to debate and question all of Bush's big court nominees. If he's on foreign relations, he'd be making trips around the world, meeting with important leaders and building a strong foreign policy resume. Armed Services wouldn't be a bad committee either.
Anyone heard anything? When would this come out?

1. I doubt Foreign Relations
I agree that would benefit him but being a state senator he has no formal background in that. As a former community activist, civil rights attorney and U of C lecturer on Constitution Law I would think Judiciary would be quite appropriate. Possibly Government Affairs, Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions and/or Banking, Housing, & Urban Affairs.

2. True, no experiance yet
I'm just saying it would benefit him to get a lot of foreign policy experiance under his belt, for it would make him a much stronger candidate in 20112/16/20 (whenever he eventually runs).

4. I am not sure how they select how goes on what committes
Despite my strong desire to see Obama rise to the top, I am not sure that basing committee selections on how they will look on a resume is one of the considerations.

I agree, however, that it would benefit him the most. When a good friend got his first teaching job offers after college there was a school he liked, but they needed a science teacher, which was not his strong point. I suggested that after a couple of years it would be and that would make him that much more flexible and marketable in the future. Same idea, I think.

3. I don't think Judiciary is necessary

since, because of his background, he has the profile and status to be just as (maybe even more) effective in dealing with these issues on the floor as he would be in the Committee, thus freeing him up for other Committees.

He could end up doing one "serious" committee, like Foreign Relations or Intelligence, another one to help him at home (Agriculture or Commerce) and one other that covers something he really likes and can get his teeth into.

My two cents.
