Holy, moley! NOW I'm pi$$ed!
We just got our butts kicked in the election, and there seemed to be no good news for miles around. But today, a golden opportunity for the Democrats fell on their lap, only to have it dropped because of 12 fellow Democrats who refused to vote on the debt limit ceiling.

Had just five of these 12 morons bothered to show up to vote NO on raising the debt ceiling, Bush and the GOP would have had the world's biggest and most embarrasing spotlight shined upon them.

A great political opportunity, a desperately-needed chance to demonstrate leadership, gone with the wind.

This vote was only House members. The Senate already approved it.

6. So it was in the House...
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 02:13 PM by Q3JR4
and 12 Dems didn't bother to show up...

What would that have done? The Republicans have majority control of both houses of congress. In the House, that means they can pass anything they want to.

12 Dems. voting against such a measure isn't going to stop it from being passed into law. Did the other Dems. vote against it? Did other Reps. vote against it?

I'm confused, where did the "spotlight" analogy come from?

7. It would be kind of hard for the Republicans to pass it
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 02:21 PM by brentspeak
when only five more "Nays" were needed to defeat it:

ON PASSAGE
S 2986, the Debt Ceiling bill
AYES NOES PRES NV
REPUBLICAN 208 10 9
DEMOCRATIC 193 12
INDEPENDENT 1
TOTALS 208 204 21

..................................................

By "spotlight", I mean that Bush would have a heck-of-a-lot of explaining to do to the American people as to why the government, under his supervision, ended up being FLAT-BROKE.

8. Don't be confused...
It's much easier to post things like:

"just got our butts kicked in the election"

"Had just five of these 12 morons bothered to show up"

"a desperately-needed chance to demonstrate leadership, gone with the wind"

Than it is to present an unemotional analysis of the reality of what happened. You are absolutely correct that there was no way this wasn't going to pass.

11. I doubt that would've happened
I think every extra Dem that voted would've been countered by a Repub who obviously didn't want to be on the record for it. They should've voted.

And yeah, I agree, what's with the HIPPIE stuff?

13. Sigh. Is recess almost over?
If so, maybe a civics class is next? Then you can learn that many Republicans game this to APPEAR moderate or sane for the folks back home. If their votes were really needed, "your" results wouldn't have been close at all; and your point would be moot.

16. Meh
While you have a good point, one that is fairly obvious, the original poster was upset on PRINCIPLE that the 12 dems sat out.

The Hippie was channeling my inner Cartman, directed at you for bashing the guy.

12. But 10 Republicans got to vote no
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 03:10 PM by dsc
when only 4 would have been able to had those 12 shown. That is 6 people we could have had an instant ad against but now don't.

14. An instant "ad" to what purpose?
Do you think people will remember this 2 years from now? Or that this vote will be the deciding factor in '06?

Here's a better "ad" for you:

Those "Red-Ink Republicans" just put us deeper in debt!

17. wow, i had no idea the censorship
on this site. I am stricken, aghast. Reading the forums for a while, and finally decide to jump in and post.... and met with this.

A (funny) flame using only the word "hippie" gets deleted. It doesn't matter that I had made a point that this chiburb guy was being unfair to the originator.

Un-fuggin-believable.

15. You're wrong
If the Democrats had succeeded in blocking this bill the headlines the following day whould have been:

DEMOCRATS SHUT DOWN GOVERNMENT

or, even worse:

DEMOCRATS STOP SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS

Don't believe me? Ask Newt Gingrich what happens when you force a government shutdown.

18. I'm telling you now
All this new "bi-partisan" cooperation we're hearing about is the code word for the one-party system that has just been mandated by the surprising landslide popular election of the emperor chimp.

They all "serve at the pleasure of pResident" now. It's the only way to keep their seat at the table.

Stick a fork in it. It's done.

"Now what?" Is the question for those of us whose souls have not been coopted by the crypto-fascist "machine".

19. So anyway, what I was trying to say was
that you can be pissed that XYZ Event happened or didn't happen, but the outcome wouldn't have been different. We simply don't have the numbers in the House to really effect the outcome of a particular piece of partisan legislation.
