Howard Dean and Wesley Clark are leading the Democratic presidential contest in New Mexico, but a third of likely Democratic voters haven't made up their minds, a Journal poll found.

Dean's support in the Jan. 12-15 survey was two points higher than Clark's. But the spread was within the poll's statistical margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points, meaning the two were technically in a dead heat.

Eighteen percent of those polled said they would vote for Dean if New Mexico's first-ever presidential caucus on Feb. 3 were held the day they were polled. Sixteen percent said they would favor Clark.

"Dean and Clark are clearly ahead of the rest of the pack," said Journal pollster Brian Sanderoff, president of Research and Polling Inc. in Albuquerque. "Howard Dean has been the (national) front-runner over the past two weeks, but Wesley Clark has been gaining momentum across the nation and in New Mexico."

3. I work for Clark in NM and
The other night I made phone calls to people who had requested Absentee Ballots here in New Mexico. I talked to 133 people and Clark got over 40% of the vote of the people I talked to with around 30% undecided. I think the trend is for people to vote for a candidate who will be strong on National Defense because everyone knows we need to run someone who can fight the war on terror or Bush will win big. I think this race will come down to Clark and Kerry when people actually make their vote. That's just my gut feeling. I predict Kerry to win Iowa.
