What do I really think about republicans?
I think their elite control every branch of federal government, with a damn-near filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. Now there are no more excuses, no more blaming the Clintons, no more blaming the so-called "tech bubble", it's time for them to take some fucking responsibility for once in their goddam lives. If the policies they enact are disastrous, they are to be recognized as the product of republicans and republicans alone.
bush is claiming a Man Date. Good. Let him have it. This is the apex of consolidated GOP power, and the golden opportunity for well-positioned republicans to enact the combined agendas of Barry Goldwater and Ralph Reed. If this is truly the best way for America to prosper, then it will be born out by visible, measurable results over the next four years. No more whining, no more spin. It's time to show us the cards.
If, by the end of bush's second term, unemployment is way down, the budget defecits are under control, Iraq and Afghanistan are thriving democracies spreading their peaceful influence throughout the Middle East, the airports and harbors are secure, Social Security is replaced by an investment fund without destroying market stability or reducing benefits, public schools are producing a greater fraction of literate and competent students than before 2000, the overwhelming majority (95%+) of the population (including disabled veterans) has adequate health care, industrial polluters have taken their own effective initiatives to reduce toxic emissions, divorce and abortion rates are down, and the purchasing power of the median salary has not declined significantly, I will be among the first to admit that the neo-conservative policies were a smashing success. I will congratulate the republicans on the results of integrating supply-side economics with agressive foreign policy goals, and improve my appraisal of corporate America.
On the other hand, if the current trend of labor force growth outrunning job creation continues, the national debt ceiling has to be raised every other year, Iraq and Afghanistan are still chaotic bloodbaths and rallying points for terrorists, major American cities are attacked by Al Qaeda operatives, Social Security "reform" includes a reduction of benefits or increased payroll taxes, the public schools are even more overcrowded and stultifying than they are now, the number of uninsured continues to grow, pollution is worse than ever, marriages still fail at 50% or more, abortion rates (legal or not) continue to outpace adoption rates, or median family incomes cannot sustain the basic necessities (food, shelter, clothing), I want to see the ruling republicans honestly admit these failures and address them credibly. I want to see appropriate changes made to the republican platform, not more of the same, and I want to see these issues covered "objectively" by FOX News so "informed" conservatives can understand the effects of what they've voted for.
That's what I think of republicans.
Over and out.
