Referendum on Marijuana laws---our Gay Marriage referendum?
If they can get their fundie base out by putting gay marriage on the ballots, we could get voters by pushing for a referendum on marijuana laws.

1. It's the right idea
but the wrong issue. I'm afraid the same people who turned out to ban gays would turn out to ban drugs.

Then there's the whole stoned slacker bit...

2. Evangelicals don't care half as much about pot as they do about gays
it isn't one of their issues.
College kids would come out in hordes to vote for a marijuana referendum

I can tell you as a potsmoking poster ... not everyone here wants to free the weed and are as brainwashed about it as any repub.

Shall I cry, kick, and scream about no one caring about an issue that's important to me?

4. Believe me, there are many more critical issues in the world
than making sure that someone can toke in public.

7. And there are more critical issues than making sure gays
don't marry.

The point is to find something that will bring people to the polls who will vote for your guy when they come, and who otherwise might not have come.

I don't think this is that issue, but whether it's "critical" is beside the point. It only has to be critical to a sizeable chunk of non-Republicans who don't normally (heh) vote.

5. Try the death penalty
If we're going to hit a wall with abortion, then the least we could do is smash them over their collective heads with Middle America's support of the death penalty and how it goes totally against Jesus' teaching of forgiveness.

6. Seriously... $20 monthly tarriff on internet access
The proceeds of which go directly to the record, movie, and software companies for "percieved" piracy.

Young (heavily democrat) people will turn out in droves to vote that sumbitch down.

10. Have it on the ballot with a marijuana initiative.
That would do it, I think.

13. oh hell no
That's a backfire waiting to happen. With pot and gay marriage initiatives the worst outcome is the status quo (still no pot, still no gay marriage). Proposing authoritarian schemes in hope of a backlash is Nader's job.

11. Approach legal marijuana from a tax revenue perspective

THink of all those red state farmers going bust, and this very valuable crop they could be growing and selling, making themselves and their states rich again.

Just a thought.

12. It was on the ballot in Alaska
Didn't pass. The spread was narrower than the margin Kerry got creamed by.
