They just showed a Dean skit on SNL
He was calling up party chairmen in Iowa and telling them to "go f*** yourself" for staying neutral or supporting Kerry

one of his aids asked him if he took any of the medication that he got for him.

I laughed from that line, but overall it was only minorly funny

1. You Beat Me by One Minute
In case the other thread gets locked: Re-post::

SNL just trashed DEAN in the opening. Portrayed him telling other Dems to "go eff" themselves, with his aide attempting to lecture him on "tact" and asking him whether he had taken "those medications we got you."

Just pointing out who trashes any Dem from any source.

3. I dunno, Tina Fey is very liberal
and last week they bashed all of Dean's rivals and not him.

9. Yup. That's what I saw.
An effective parody requires some basis in fact. That's what makes you laugh.

I didn't laugh at this.

10. It cracked me up...
You may not have noticed, he does have a little problem with rubbing people the wrong way.

But then again, I don't think that Howard Dean walks on water, so I guess I would see the humor.

14. It's almost as if they took off on the John Kerry Rolling Stones interview
and the "Dean is angry" meme to combine into an utterly ridiculous piece of crap.

I haven't seen anything really funny in the way of political comedy on SNL in at least two decades (I think it's longer than that, though).

11. OMG!
A comedy show making fun of public figures!

What's next? Making fun of pop music stars? Mocking current trends? I'm aghast.

13. Making fun of public figures is one thing,
but making fun of Howard Dean is WAAAY out of line.

Sorry, lost my train of thought. :silly: SNL hasn't done good political satire in 10 years.

8. Nah
I'm thinking of the more adult days of Lovitz, Carvey, Hartman, etc.

Intelligent humor pretty much died on SNL with the advent of the young kids - Sandler, Schneider, Spade, etc.

12. I agree that SNL sucks these days
Edited on Sat Jan-17-04 11:59 PM by beaconess
with these non-funny cast members (with the exception of Mya Rudolph) whose only apparent qualification for starring on SNL is that they were once the class clown...

And I'm really sick of seeing every black female character on the show having to be played by a cross-dressing black man. Can't they find a real black woman to cast on the show?

But I do think that the show's political humor is often quite good - Tina Fey, Darrell Hammond, Jimmy Fallon, Will Farrell are top-notch.

17. Will FARRELL Is Gone
Tina FEY is said to be a big Lib personally and she's the head writer, but it hasn't shown. HAMMOND is up there with FERRELL, but he appears not to have gotten over the CHEENEE intimidating him at NOT skewering Shrub at the first White House Correspondents Dinner. I'm not asking that actors on a commercial program take our side; just do the targeting EQUALLY and Shub has been given a pass. FALLON does nothing for me, but Prince Phillip said, "There's no accounting for taste."

18. A big difference between the old SNL and the more recent ones
is that the early cast members were funny no matter WHAT they did. In recent years, even the funniest cast members really are have one or two funny characters. Otherwise, they're pretty mediocre.

20. I just re-watched "Animal House" on DVD. Compared to Belushi
(John, that is!)

Michael Myers (who is funny) was mediocre.

One truly classic skit comes to my mind (among many, too numerous to mention):

"Samurai Hotel": With Richard Pryor as the bellboy. JB & RP speak only in pseudo-Japanese, until RP slashes the front desk with his sword. JB breaks character, says (in English, no accent) "Works for me" and picks up the "guest's" bags and the skit ends.

26. The skit was trash.
SNL is all but dead now. They can't do political satire any more.

The biggest "comedy" story out there is Bush, and it doesn't get laughs.

Ha, ha. We are in a really, really dangerous time and our current "president" is an idiot surrounded by a bunch of jackals. Ha, ha.

Not a good time for comedy.

28. SNL is Lame
They are phony "hip" and do not have any good insight into current events. Compare the comedy of "The Daily Show" with SNL. "The Daily Show" is much more intelligent and a hell of lot more funny.

Did you ever see the Tim Robbins'movie "Bob Roberts"? In the film there's a comedian appearing on an SNL like show. He wants to do a comedy skit about the company that owns the network (GE) who also makes nuclear bombs. The hip producer won't let him do the skit because "it wouldn't be funny." To me that part of the movie sums up SNL. They are too cowardly to do any "real" political humor and satire. They will be safe and make fun of politician's personalities and foibles, but they won't delve into the substance of the issues.

29. On the balance, it's the worst
cast in the history of the show.

With only a few exceptions, the cast is really lacking talent.

If Lorne doesn't retool soon, it could be the end for SNL.

30. I love "SNL has jumped the shark" threads
Practically every season the show has been on, people have been predicting its demise. "Now back in the days of X, Y, and Z... that was comedy. Now it's a bunch of young amateurs." Well, duh - it's almost always been a bunch of young amateurs! Of course there are sketches and even entire episodes that stink, but bouncing back is what SNL does best.

Mark my words: SNL will outlive us all. Like my grandmother, it's tougher than a boiled owl.
