1. I can't quote polling data,
but I can tell you that if felt pretty hopeless the whole time. For one thing, when he repudiated his first vice-president, Tom Eagleton because of Eagleton's mental illness some years back, it was clear that McGovern wasn't going to win.

Speaking for myself, that was the first election I was eligible to vote for, and I didn't vote, because I couldn't decide between two awful choices. I regretted it ever since. And have never missed another election.

3. Not good
In early September it was 64-30 for Nixon; and he improved only a few points between then and the election and ended up losing 60-37.

He did have good crowds though, which gave him hope.

4. Let me put it charitably: McGovern was toast.
He never had a lead over Nixon.

Also, Mondale never had a lead over Reagan.

Dole never had a lead over Clinton.

And Goldwater never had a lead over LBJ.

This is nothing like '64, '72, '84, or '96. The incumbent will not win in a walk unless he steals it.
