For the 1st time in 40 years, our local paper endorses a DEMOCRAT!
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 06:36 PM by Padraig18
Our local, family-owned newspaper is Republican, but of the paleo-con variety. Imagine my surprise just now when I opened it, turned to the editorial page and found that they are endorsing Sen. John F. Kerry for President of the United States! In the last 100 years, they have endorsed exactly TWO Democrats--- Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson!

To quote:

"In 2000, George Bush promsied to be 'a uniter, not a divider'. Sadly, he has only managed to further polarize the American electorate. In addition, he has abandoned any sense of fiscal propriety and common-sense tax policy, becoming the first President in the history of this Republic to cut marginal tax rates during time of war. His ill-advised attack on Iraq has become a disaster, and it threatens to become a Vietnam-like quagmire. He has alienated many long-standing allies, and in doing so has increased rather than decreased the danger we face.

While we cannot say that we are elated at the prospect of a Kerry presidency, we nonetheless believe the senator to be a man of substantial intellect, great moral courage and overall sound judgment. We can only hope that Sen. Kerry will be able to undo the worst of the damage President Bush has done to our nation in four short years.

Sen. Kerry is endorsed."

8. Ha, our Chicago SunTimes has that beat. Not since the late 1800's
have they endorsed a Democratic candidate. But they easily broke through that barrier and dumped Bush in the Trash Can!

Illinois is a great state to live in these days.
