CBS News: OBL caps a rough week for Bush
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/10/29/politics/main652417.shtml

The airing of a tape of Osama bin Laden capped a week of bad news for President Bush that threatened to derail his candidacy in the final days of the presidential election.

For Mr. Bush, it was one piece of bad news after another – reporting of hundreds of tons of explosives looted in Iraq, tens of billions more for the war. And late this afternoon, a tape of bin Laden airing nationwide, where America’s chief adversary appears in good health and secure.

Even before the latest bin Laden tape, Sen. John Kerry had put President Bush on the defensive in the final week of the presidential election.

9. How can it not be?
1. He's not dead, but alive.

2. It proves that Kerry was right; outsourcing the job of capturing bin Laden didn't work.

3. With bin Laden on the loose, * has not kept the US "safer".

4. Reminds everyone that it was bin Laden, not Saddam, who attacked on 9/11.

5.Bin Laden says America won't be safer with either candidate, so calling it an "endorsement" for either doesn't work.

6. bin Laden brings up Bush's* catastrophic failure to protect Americans on 9/11. including the "pet goat" idiocy (like the "Mosh" video, one can't discount the truth of a message just because one loathes the messenger).

7. Reminds us all that the Iraq war is a distraction from the real enemy. A distraction that costs billions, has left over 1,100 GIs and 100,000 Iraqis dead, and is a quagmire with no end in sight.

Any more?

8. Amen to that
And that is why I turned that BS off when it became evident this afternoon what they were trying to do.

It took tremendous force of will... ordinarily it's like passing a wreck, can't help but look, and then you often see things you would rather not have seen and feel ill and powerless because there's nothing you can do about it. But I'm glad I turned that crap off today, from what I've been reading on DU.

And BTW, good article. It does suggest that the tape is bad for *: "And late this afternoon, a tape of bin Laden airing nationwide, where America’s chief adversary appears in good health and secure."

But I still see this dead horse being beaten again: "With Democrats admitting that Kerry failed to captivate voters (...)". Puh-LEEZE!

3. Agreed...
we DU'ers have got to stop falling prey to the media. This is terrible news for *. This just proves JK's point that we went after the wrong man and now our troops are in a mess in IRAQ with no real purpose for being there. JK should be strong, forceful, and stress this message. Stay focused guys. Don't believe the hype. This is OUR story.

6. An Excellent Analysis
All this does is re-emphasize the failures of the criminals of the '00 Coup in prosecuting the war against the Islamic fundamentalist radicals who atacked our country. It gives a new edge to, and further sustains the line that the criminals missed a golden opportunity to catch this wretch by "outsourcing" the job at Tora Bora, and to the colossal distraction from this vital effort the invasion of Iraq represents. It drives home to the people that for all the bluster of the Andover cheerleader, all his "Dead or alive" and "We'll smoke 'em out" and his "You can run but you can't hide" posturings, the fact is that Bin Ladin has indeed evaded the might of the United States, as this has been directed by this criminally incompetent administration, and is still in operation and doing quite well for himself. It is an excellent and sovereign reminder of the failures of this administration in what most people consider a vital matter, and gives the lie entirely to the Andover cheerleader's pretense that he is up to the job of protecting the nation. For that, better to turn to someone who has actually closed with an armed enemy, and shot him dead....

"If you repeat a lie often enough, you are a Republican."

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

That's spinning it against Bush, folks.

11. I'm glad they're presenting it this way.
Actually, I'm pleasantly surprised. They sound much more reasonable than some of the posters this afternoon on DU.:)
