a) first, to download an image (or perform any other "right click" function) on a one-button Mac mouse or trackpad, you need to *control*-click, then choose "save image as," "copy link to clipboard," or whatever. Better yet, buy a 2-button Mac mouse.


b) to post an image with a message here, the image can't just be attached or pasted into your message. it needs to be hosted somewhere else on the net (other than our avatars). there are many free image hosting services, but I am not expert on these. you probably don't want to serve the image from your own desktop computer, unless you have always-on broadband, know how to secure a web server, and are willing to use the bandwidth and take the security risk. If the image you want is ALREADY hosted elsewhere on the web and has an accessible URL (here is where "right click"/"Control click" and "copy link to clipboard" or "copy image location" comes in handy) you can simply paste that URL into your message. I believe you can also do fancier things with the <img src="xxxx"> tag as well.

But I'm often a bit surprised at the volume of images here, especially in .sig files. They really use a lot of bandwidth and make pages load slowly. They're cute, but when the same poster uses the same giant image four or five times in the same thread it gets frustrating if I'm on dialup or bad wireless (too often the latter). It's got to be a drain on DU's own server capacity even though the images are served from elsewhere, simply because it delays page loads. And too often we are technically "stealing" bandwidth when we post images from elsewhere on the net, often from the sites of fellow liberal bloggers etc. (The big news orgs make it hard to embed their images in other web pages; it's the little people who don't know how to limit this). I've sometimes thought we should start a voluntary campaign to reduce .sig file images a bit (I also manage another web forum, so I am particularly sensitive to all this). At least, I like it when some posters remember to put"large pictures" or the equivalent in the thread titles of image-heavy threads.

Either Rove and Co. are shitting major bricks -- and I'd love to have the stool softener concession on Air Force One, cuz you know the presswhores are too -- or they have a true doozy they've been saving up for the weekend. Basically, they have two options, and neither is a sure bet:

1) Terra attack -- not just an alert. The scary videotape ploy seems to be getting drowned out. That looked pretty hail mary to me.

2) Actually wheeling out either the Big O or catching the mysterious Mister Z. The latter might not register , or it might be just enough. The former would, at this point, begin to look mighty suspicious.

Option 3 is that they have some major provable dirt on our man. But don't you think they would have floated it by now if they had, say, the infamous flag video freepers are always imagining in their wet dreams?
