You OWE Me....Don't You Goddamn Give Up..
I think I speak for about 97% of you this evening---the other 3% are either drunk or are under 18 years old. You are scared tonight..aren't you? You have looked at these polls and got some kind of sick in your gut. You know that even the "trend" polls like Zogby still has us NOT winning. You know that time is running out. You hurt and you are tense....aren't you???

Young folks (anyone under about 50), you either take up this cross and fight your goddamn guts out or you are going to be NAILED to it. I've fought this fight since 1963. I marched against my family (it wasn't just a Southern 'thing') with the black leaders for racial equality------any of you who are 'less then white' owe your prospects in this country to all of us who were shot at, beat and imprisoned to get you those rights just a handful of years ago.

I marched against 'Nam which was nothing but a goddamn lining of the pockets of the military industrial complex (sound familiar). I fought it on the U of Wisconsin campus where there were bomings and loss of life (grad student in the buildings bombed). We were subject, all of us, to FBI files and federal arrest...but we kept on going.

From there it was everything from the environment to Women's Rights--if it wasn't for us, ladies, you would have only the same selections as we did: You could become a teacher or nurse and expected to resign as soon as you married Mr. Right.

I'm weary and sick of fighting; and at age 60 I have the right to be. This election, right now, isn't looking good-----there I said it. You either get off of your goddamn asses (your Mamas have left the building and are tired of fighting for you) or you go back to where we began fighting for you. Only this time the corporate establishment is smarter and more equipped and will never let you rise again. Better get in those trenches and fight because we, who have been there and done that, are not going to be around much longer to fight for you. Ball is in your court..........

You're right on the money. Some of us, myself included, need a swift kick in the ass.
this is a serious fight and we have to stay motivated.

Thank you!

25. There are a few other threads like this one, and it is about time!
Those of us that are a little older have seen many changes for the better from our previous battles. We have also witnessed the harm complacency can bring. For anyone that survived the 60's, you know what I'm talking about.
We must be smart and stay focused on the issues we can win on.

26. Reps are down too
On Friday I asked a Republican friend what he thought about the last debate. This guy, who has been a longtime bigwig in Nebraska Republican circles and a rah-rah go-getter, said he couldn't stand to watch the debates after the first one, noting "I think our guy's done."

Chins up kids, it's all a battle of attrition from this point on.

And you bet I'm going to continue figting. Planning the trip to the swing state now! Planning to work the telephone banks now! Doing my affirmative prayer now (postive creative visualization of Kerry winning!). Went to Michael Moore and contributed! Got to know I did everything in my power!

4. Strange, the polls don't make me feel like that. I know Kerry will, if
there's not massive voter fraud (and I think this is almost a given). That's where the war is now. It's not the voters, it's those that will count the votes.

23. I was around in the 60s. All my friends were too. This is a repeat of a
very bad situation, one that we were so complacent (sp) and we took for granted. When we got Nixon out, we we naive enough to think that it couldn't happen again. Little did we know that all the sleezeballs from the Nixon administration had dug a hole and were waiting around to make a comeback. And they are far more dangerous this time.

NEVER TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED. That's the lesson I hope we learn if we come out of this election with bush* out of office. Because if we do, they'll be back. Or others like them.

37. We will
At 49 I still fall in your young category by one year, but I remember the 60's and I did not turn into a "yuppie".

I'm getting the feeling (or hoping) that this has now come to the point where a lot of us can't really post our plans. This is going to be ugly, no matter the outcome of the election. I am so angry each day that it feels like my head is exploding.

Let me just put it this way. Many people can't go too far because they have children, etc. I have no children, have had Multiple Sclerosis for 14 years and have now lost my health insurance. This is the person they should fear. Not because I'm strong, but because a person like myself has everything to gain and nothing to lose by fighting.

and that is what this old bitch is the most afraid of. We didn't give up back then when it was nothing but one defeat after another. 13. When they start calling people with cell phones
...I will not trust, but give some regard, to what they say. In my close family, off the top of my head, I can count seven voters who use cell phones exclusively. They are all Kerry supporters. None of them have a landline, or live in a house or apartment with a landline.

And ya know, when you are working two jobs to make ends meet, you often aren't home when those dweebs call.

your comment makes you seem certifiable. Yes, that's just the country we want to have. Don't let anyone vote who doesn't agree with you.

Why don't you just move to some country where NO voting is allowed? I think you'd be much happier.

(On edit: If a freeper came out with a comment like this everyone would be up in arms. Strange that is seems to be taken lightly here where we are adament against fascism.)

I've gotten yelled at around here for saying this but --

Democrat ugly ain't any prettier than Republican ugly.

Using those kind of tactics on our side only taints us. And I don't want to give them any justification for using the same tactics as us.

We can win this fair and square. Here in Wisconsin we have recourse if something illegal looks to be going down. We have poll watchers.

(to the person above you) You will NOT taint a Kerry victory with questionable tactics, do you hear me!

27. Posts like this one
can of course be picked up by freepers lurking here, cross posted on their own forums, and used to foment even more anti-Kerry sentiment. Good work.

On the original post - thank you so much for saying this! It is so easy for people who have been born since all the things that were changed in the 1960's and 1970's to simply accept such as the status quo. I'm 45, grew up in the Deep South, am racially mixed, and I remember those times very well - and I remember separate "but equal" schools, bathrooms, waiting rooms and drinking fountains.

People need to remember that social changes can go backwards. Freedoms can be lost, rights can be eroded. It is entirely possible for social reform to be erased in less than a generation.

Here's a list of things I've done this campaign season that I've never done before:

Participated in a precinct caucus
Introduced a resolution condemning the PATRIOT Act in the caucus
Was elected senatorial delegate for my precinct
Managed my wife's campaign for state delegate for our precinct
Donated money to a Democratic Presidential campaign
Produced and sold pro-Kerry bumper stickers with my own money
Assisted in building hundreds of Kerry yard signs
Canvassed neighborhoods with my wife
Registered people in my precinct and elsewhere to vote
Manned telephones at my county Democratic HQ
Agreed to serve as a poll greeter on Election Day

Still think we don't take this seriously? Hell, DU isn't a breeding ground for armchair Democrats - it's a gathering place for activists. While I appreciate your anger at the apathetic Gen-X types, you won't find many of them here.

30. I'm not scared and I'm not giving up.
Call me crazy, but I feel good right now. How many papers endorsed Kerry today? Something like 30. And many of those papers endorsed Bush 4 years ago.

The polls are skewed. They don't take into consideration the MILLIONS of new voters registered this year. Voter disenfranchisement and fraud is a reality. But Kerry and Edwards have thousands of lawyers standing ready at the first sign of trouble.

Please, try not to get discouraged. Take a few days off from the media. I'll fight for you.

That's what I'm worried about.

The campaign (Shrum and Cahill) and the DNC hasn't shown us they can get out in front of stories and control the spin: SwifVets, Sinclair, Mary Cheney. With 15 days left, we can't afford another August.

Remember, it was Kerry's formdiable debating skills which brought us back from the SwiftVet pounding -- NOT anything our Dem leaders did.

Schwerner, Cheney and Goodman, three young men brutally murdered to intimidate Blacks in Mississippi from voting in elections.

From the time I studied this story as a young teenager, I realized theese three men and many others like them sacrificed their lives so that I can vote without intimidation.

I am fired up, can't take no more.

34. I don't pay a bit of attention to the polls. I am NOT afraid.
I am NOT scared. The election IS looking good to me.

What isn't looking good is your use of the phrase 'God Da*@ed.' I HATE it when people use that phrase. There ARE Christians, liberal Christians at that, on this board. My being one of them. Why is it that no one ever uses the word Buddha or Allah when wanting to curse to the high heavens? Why is it that one always has to use the word God? That God happens to mean something to me and to a lot of other people on this board. Think you can maybe avoid using it in the future out of respect for fellow board members who are offended by this phrase?

I won't be able to see your reply as I am putting this thread on ignore.

I believe Kerry will win the popular vote, and the only thing that worries me is fraud by the Bush people.

And don't worry too much about this younger generation.

I just returned from New Mexico about a week ago, and had been helping the League of Conservation Voters' ground campaign for Kerry there.

Most of the people working on the campaign were in their 20s like me.

I really want to go back but I ran out of money after spending much of my own money...

36. Only one poll matters
That's the poll on November 2nd.

I live in a swing state that used to be reliably liberal. We are the only state other than DC that did NOT go Reagan when he nearly swept the nation.

I'm an election judge.

I attended my precinct caucus and was a delegate to the senate district caucus.

I've got three Republican co-workers who are as up in arms about the health care issue as I am, and it turns out that even the one who is a self-described Hard Right Winger is in favor of a national health care plan. Another, who is a fan of Rush Limbaugh, has been discussing the history of the labor movement in glowing terms. I think he wants to start a union. The third is more moderate. We're talking about three people who voted for Bush last time.

There's more but I have to go to work now.
