Don't get me wrong, I *want* Kerry to win, and I've already voted early to cast my vote for him! It's just that, having volunteered in elections since 1984, I've learned that the polls are rarely very far off from what the election results are.
In 1984, for instance, I volunteered for Mondale/Ferraro in Nebraska. Now, this was Reagan country, but there was a lot of enthusiasm, we got a lot of new young voters coming in to Dem HQ, the whole bit. I seriously thought Mondale had a chance of winning Nebraska. Holy shit, was I ever wrong...he took D.C. and Minnesota, and Reagan kicked his ass in Nebraska. Ever since then, I no longer listen to those who say "polls don't vote, people do". Because that's 100% garbage--pollsters are hired for a reason, and that reason is accuracy.
This election is going to be close. I'm furious that this is the truth, but the truth must be faced. There's no landslide in the making, and it's going to be a fight in the courts just like 2000...only this time, I think it's going to be in more states than just Florida. No matter who wins, I think there may be rioting by people supporting the other candidate, because this country is extremely polarized. All we can hope for is that, by being prepared financially and legally, the case of Kerry vs. Bush will have a better outcome in the courts.
Lord, how I wish there would be a landslide. But I'm no longer young and naive as I was in 1984, and there are too many signs that we're going to be living out "Election Year 2000: The Sequel" on November 3 and beyond.
That's why we've got to get out and vote, and do all we can to defend our right to vote and make sure Bu$hCo doesn't get away with hijacking the USA again.
Though, if he does, it'll just make things worse for the GOP, because we'd be able to run Hillary Clinton in 2008. <evil laughter>
