Last 3 nights in a row, my Kerry Signs are being ripped off my Property!
I live in Marin County, CA....its an area that is pretty much Kerry country and as liberal as you can find (remember The "Marin-hottubber" comment as Poppy Bush referred to all of us as).

I feel so violated....I have gone up and posted new ones only 3 times now ripped down...I even stapled them on the fence about 30 times...It's taking great effort to get them off for whoever is doing this....I even put a sign up that said "Two times my signs have been ripped off this fence - I love my country and the 1st Amendment - Protect them both, not destroy them" - VOTE

Anyway, they left that sign up and ripped all the Kerry/Edwards (A stronger America) signs off next to it, leaving bits hanging....

I'm so angry - :grr: ....I want to catch these person(s)....Any suggestions of what to do? Meanwhile, I'm going to keep posting them up...I'm not going to let these Fascists silence me....but I will say that if this kind of thing is happening in a liberal area like this, I am very concerned that this is a very big warning about the aggression that is going to be coming our way in the coming weeks and the ugliness that is coming....

What is happening to our country? As much as I can't stand the Bush/Cheney administration, it would never occur in a Million years to rip someones sign down and violate their rights of free speech and expression, not to mention their private property.

Hey, how are things going there in Dayton, Ohio? I'm actually talking to a friend about going on Halloween Weekend through Election Day to work their in getting out the vote for Kerry....My friend is from there and we would stay with her brother and sister-in-law....I also have it from reliable sources that the campaign will most likely have Kerry or Edwards there one of those days...

42. I just taped it back together.
I do have a spare, but they are pretty scarce around here. I kind of like the "ragged glory" statement of the taped together one...

Kerry was here in Xenia today, then I guess he's at the stadium downtown on Tuesday! They must love us here...

Chainsaw is coming to Xenia on Tuesday... copycats. They're just shadowing K/E for some reason.

You would put the flag on the sign so that you would have these patriots on tape desecrating the flag as well as your sign.

Sorry but I don't know where you'd rent one.

carried out by desperate people.

They know their candidate sucks, so all they can do is try to tear down Kerry, literally and figuratively.

12. It's that desperation that I am afraid of....I'm seeing it everywhere &
...they are getting more aggressive by the day...

I had a neighbor a few weeks back stop his car and lean out to talk to me as I was getting my mail...he starts going off about "Blackie Obama" the White Man's Black Man and then telling me about what a traitor to his country Kerry is....

I was stunned as I listened to this man rant...it would never occur to me to ever "stop" by a neighbor who is a Bush supporter and go on a tyraid about their candidate (even though I have lots to say)...Furthermore, the racist nature and the anger in his voice frightened me....Another neighbor did something similar a day ago going off about John Kerry to me and "how dare he mention Mary Cheney's sexuality" As if they are suddenely so righteous when its this administration that is trying to divide people on the gay issue and the constitutional amendment....do they think they can change my mind? Intimidate me? Scare me? I tell you, its only making me all the more resolved to fighting for my country and the neo-con, fundamentalist "Rapture" obsessed people who have hijacked democracy and have all these sheeple and racists who seem to be behind them lock-step.

6. you can
paint the edges with 'Tanglefoot,' which is incredibly sticky. Don't do the top edge, where birds land, but the sides and back (depending on how you mount it). My neighbor filled his with tanglefoot, and, while the sign was still ripped off, he takes delight in knowing that it probably cost someone hundreds of dollars to clean the leather seats in his Lexus.

I just replaced mine, and smeared Crisco with cayenne pepper around the perimeter. I'm hoping that when people touch it, they won't know what it is and they'll leave it.

33. I think you can get the Tanglefoot
at garden stores or farm stores. It actually comes in different strengths, from insect 'stickiness' to what my neighbor describes as 'human strength.' My guess is that the stores would carry the insect strength - though if you find someone glued to your signpost tomorrow morning, you'll know it was the stronger stuff! :D

One reason I added the cayenne to the crisco for mine - well, besides the small hope that someone might rub their eyes with the crap - is to discourage raccoons and possums from eating my crisco-laden signs! :)

We live on a pretty rural road, so our house is too far from the road to either put signs in windows or to use the portable alarm buzzer things that some people have been using.

76. You could always use flystrips too.
just pull it out and stick one side of it to the back of your signs and as soon as they touch it, they get that crap all over them. Of course, if they are wearing gloves, this wont matter.

You could also string fishing line with about 10 soda cans attached. Put small rocks in the cans to make as much racket as possible. I doubt they will stick around to quiet it down. Most likely will just drop the sign and slither off.

Yup, simple old Vaseline. It's pratically invisible until the sneak theives try to grab hold of the sign...

...and find their hands covered in slime.

My partner has used that technique in previous elections to safeguard her Clinton and Gore yard signs. Works like a charm.

Does Vaseline work on bumperstickers?
My bumperstickers were ripped off at school a couple of weeks ago. I would love to put some sharp razors under my stickers, but there is probably a law against that. For a sign, broken glass taped to the back might be good, but that is probably illegal too. It's funny how nobody has said anything negative yet about my stickers when I'm getting out of my car, yet they rip them off when I'm not around.

82. Slight improvement, but harder to find.
Need to find an industrial supplier, but a $3 tube of a substance called Dychem "Hi-Spot Blue", takes Vaseline one step better, by adding a permanent blue dye. Its intended use is to help fitting close tolerance parts together. Its "traditional" use was, in the days of black telephones, to give the foreman "blue ear syndrome".

Its *formulated* to transfer between surfaces easily, with just light contact, and I can testify to the dye's longevity on skin.

has been up for a month now with no mishaps (Raleigh, NC), but we have an ADT sign out as well and all the kids in the neighborhood think we have cameras with tape rolling to catch people in our yard. I've done nothing to disabuse them from this notion. Now that it's getting closer to crunch time maybe I should start taking my sign in at night as well.

13. A Solution By Gainesville Democrats
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 04:02 PM by iamjoy
Visiting my father-in-law this weekend, lives in a fairly well-to-do neighborhood. A couple of supporters on the main street have nailed Kerry signs high on a pine tree. One is the typical Kerry sign, another neighbor (across the street) has on that says "Bush Must Go"

It would take a ladder to get them down.

On the other hand, the two Bush/Cheney signs I've seen in the neighborhood are typical yard signs.

added on edit: Gainesville, Florida that is.

There are still some very good people in Marin (the majority, IMHO) but there's also a very large "ME! MINE! ME! MINE! ME! MINE!" Element.

I say, get some thick gardening gloves and for the next one rub the thing with poison oak.

Edit: You should also take some bit of consolation in this- It's my experience that Northern California has some of the most angry, pissed off right-wingers, with the worst forms of barely sublimated aggression, because they KNOW they're horribly outnumbered here.

Wash with this stuff when you're done. It's the ONLY thing that I've ever found that helps. (Yeah, aside from having to take a regimen of prednisone-- I get it really bad myself) If you're someone who tends to react to Poison Oak, it's not a bad idea to have some on hand anyway.

21. Do you have a yard? You could try what this guy did:
HURDLE MILLS (AP) — John Clayton was hopping mad when someone stole the small "Kerry for President" sign from his yard. Now he's used his lawnmower to make a replacement — with huge letters cut into the grass.

"I thought I'd put a sign in my yard can't nobody do harm to unless they go out of their way to do it," he said.

Clayton, 54, said his vote for Kerry this year will be only the second time he's supported a Democrat since he began voting in 1968.

His daughter gave him a small yard sign that he put in his grass last month, only to find one morning that someone had taken it away. He tried to get another, but none was available.

22. For whatever it's worth, there's a house on the corner of a very busy
street in a prominent residential section not far from me. It had three bush/cheney signs carefully positioned so everybody going and coming on the big, heavily-trafficked boulevard couldn't miss 'em. This morning, they're gone. I don't know why. In that neighborhood, frankly, there are more Kerry/Edwards signs and bumper stickers, so this was really obvious in the way it stuck out. I don't know what it means. I'm not sure if those signs got stolen or if the residents of that house had a change of heart or just decided it was better to be discreet.

The K is 22 feet long, and the other letters are 15 feet. The whole name is 71 feet wide. It took about six hours to create and needs nearly daily maintenance.

Mark Phillips, chairman of the Person County Republican Party, said he thinks the sign is ingenious.

"If Kerry is his man, more power to him," Phillips said. "I wish someone would mow 'Bush' in their yard."

30. stick straight pins or sewing needles in the top and down the sides,
pointing out. you can fold over a little of the material and put the pin through, so it stands up a little straighter and is a little more taut.

that's what i did on my two new signs after my first kerry sign was stolen about a month ago.

if some fat freeper comes along in the wee hours and grabs hold, he's going to get stabbed in two or three places in the palm of each hand and squeal like a little pig.

his only hope is that he doesn't yell loud enough for me to hear him and come outside.

80 signs were stolen in my neighborhood by ROTC students.

My local paper wouldn't even report it in the news. Said it was trivial.

This from a reporter whose big story since he was hired on was a battle over doublewide mobiles in some local trailer park.

Believe me, many of us know exactly how you feel.

Could you rig a trap? Remember that old game mousetrap game with its Rube Goldbergian contraptions for kicking butt?

I would love to see the act of plucking a sign trigger a huge bucket of assorted filth and a packet of bright red dye to tip over the thief's head creating a mild electrical shock due to an electrified pad on the ground around the sign that would further trip a huge spotlight and siren with the sound of german shepherds snarling and voices yelling, "Stop or we shoot." A rakehandle to smash his face as he runs and steps on the tines, a careless skate to catch his other foot, some low hanging frying pans in a tree... boy what I wouldn't give to see someone fall in my trap. :)

69. Alternate sign
A woman in WI put up a sign that reads " you can steal my sign but not my vote" I thought you might enjoy the sentiment. If you want to round up a posse to help smack down the culprit, say the word!

and she just told me about a Women's group who had put up a HUGE 8-10' Kerry sign with a light shining on it, on a highway near her and someone stole it! So, they put up another one and they have posted GUARDS with cameras at night until the election. I hope they catch whoever took the sign. This is so typical of repukes. They hate losing and just can't play fair. They're Nazis.

There was a post here yesterday about a man who uses barbed wire inside the fold of the signs, poke the barbs through the top and when someone tries to steal it they get nailed. He said he has found signs laying in his yard with blood all over them, but the sign's still there! :hi:

47. Turn these lemons into lemonade. Rather than just a sign you have an issue
And what you are doing seems, to me, to be fantastic. You might even want to contact your local news media and/or the local Democratic Party about this. Maybe you can help make it a bigger issue outside of just the folks who drive by and see your ripped up but taped back together sign.

48. It tells me that Bush's supporters are insecure about their candidate.
So, they lash out by pullling Kerry signs, thinking it will turn peoples' minds around.

There are more signs of Bush's support eroding around where I live. People are crying sour grapes on the debates by saying stuff like the debates aren't going to change any voters, etc.

50. a suggestion
I've been working at the Kerry/Edwards office here in Eugene Oregon and when I give out lawn signs I always recommend that people bring them in at night. You can't see them anyways at night and most of the theft here in Eugene occurs at night.Try it.

56. It's good to be here Longhorn........
If anyone's interested in what's going on up here in Oregon, well I got my ballot in the mail today (we're the only state that has exclusively "by mail" elections , no polling places)The energy in Eugene has been unbelieveable, but you have to remember the Greatful Dead used to hang out here, and the saying goes "old hippies never die they just move to Eugene". I do however live 9 miles outside of town, ranch country with quite a few Bush signs. But I'm certain Oregon is going to Kerry, the campaign office has been swamped with people wanting to volunteer, buy signs, stickers etc. I feel positive but realize we have to work our asses off over the next two and a half weeks!

61. I was just in Oregon campaigning and volunteering for the Eugene office!
It was great.....I even made it into the local paper there....Did you see the story? I'm the Mommy of two who was doing my "political walkabout"...next week I leave for Arizona....

Your right about the energy in Oregon...I left your state feeling energized and knowing in my heart that its going to Kerry, not Bush....There might be lots of signs for Bush/FUCheney around there, but I met lots of WOMEN who said that the signs belonged to their husbands and that they were voting Kerry!!!!

:kick:

PS: Welcome to the DU! :hi: :toast:

55. What I did in 2000
Gore signs all over Orlando were being stolen, and our campaign headquarters were out of them. I took home a pile of window signs (the flimsy cardboard ones), bought wooden stakes at a lumber yard, and made stacks of new signs-the thing was, my S.O. took an ax to the wooden stakes and sliced the edges up enough that if ANYONE tried to rip them out of the ground, their hands would end up filled with splinters. Not the kindest thing to do, but we had had ENOUGH!

59. What would be doubly good
...is if you took your fancy sign in at night, and replaced it with a homemade one with those very sentiments on it.

Other ideas:

--Spray sign with workable fixative, sprinkle cayenne pepper all over it (or use double sided clear tape, same effect)

--Put a sign underneath, or attached to, your sign at night that says "SMILE, You're on CANDID CAMERA!"

--Decorate the area around the sign with every bit of dog poop you come across.

--Put on gloves, grab some poison ivy, and rub, rub, rub that sign (don't forget what you did when the time comes to take it down!)

--If you light your house at Christmas with a spotlight, put the spotlight on the sign, with the "Smile, you're on CANDID CAMERA" sign underneath it at night.

--Make a bold, noticeable, brightly painted homemade sign to put beside the campaign sign that says "POLICE OFFICERS FOR KERRY-EDWARDS"...ya never DO really know whose house you are messin' with!

I have to say, I do like the Vaseline trick--imagine that you are a sign thief, and your heart is a-pounding anyway, and you get all this goo over yourself--you have to wonder what is in it, and what it is.

Perhaps a combo of all these ideas is the way to go. In any event, good luck!

80. THEY RIPPED ALL 8 OF MY SIGNS LAST NIGHT! I'M SO UPSET!!
I'm shaking right now...I just called the Sherriff's Dept and they are on the way....to date, it's been over $200 in signs....I'm so upset I am shaking....

They were on the upper part of my property facing a main thoroughfare....I'm so sickened and violated...is this a warning of things to come to those of us that dare speak out for democracy and what we believe? The even more brazen thing is they left in tact my signs saying to them that I love my country and this is my right of free speech...Even the sign that said that they can't steal my vote was left up...but all the Kerry/Edwards signs were shredded and torn, some bits hanging where I left them...

87. It's hard to do it nightly and constantly - I'm a mommy of two, including
to a nursing baby....so I'm limited on how well I can "stake" out...I'm looking into the hi-tech wireless surveillance cameras online right now.

Also, the signs are on a fence that backs up to my property facing out towards the road...I can't see from the inside of the house, so I physically would have to be out away from the house on the other side of the street that backs up behind my property (and its about about 1/2 an acre in size)...Anyway, when I did stake out on Saturday, I wasn't able to catch anyone....(it was cold and wet too...)

But I also can't obsess about this because there is so much to be worried about and I'm going to swing states starting Thursday morning...

78. In MARIN COUNTY??? That's unbelievable...(but not really)
I'm in Santa Cruz County.....more conservatives living here then ever before. Still no reports of vandalism yet...not that I know of.

I was saying to others in DU that Calif. isn't all that liberal anymore. Parts are RED parts are BLUE. I would have guessed that Marin would be a safe blue area. yikes!

I don't have a yard to display signs so I use Magnetic "Bumper Stickers" on my van. I take them off when I leave the vehicle. So far so good.

You could put signs inside your front window?? Not very lovely looking but effective. Ha, I've actually seen people with signs on their roofs!! Get a video thingy hooked up and/or call the authorities.

Good luck; sorry you are having that problem in lovely Marin :(

89. Add a flag
You know those little giveaway US flags.

Insert one or two into the top of the signs. The freepers may think twice about desecrating a flag.

We've had a good number of the 200 signs we put up last week ripped down and torn up. Someone suggested the flag idea (it IS our flag too afterall) and it seems to be working.
