Oct. 14, 2004 -- Following inquiries by ABC News, the Pentagon has dropped plans to force a severely wounded U.S. soldier to repay his enlistment bonus after injuries had forced him out of the service.

Army Spc. Tyson Johnson III of Mobile, Ala., who lost a kidney in a mortar attack last year in Iraq, was still recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center when he received notice from the Pentagon's own collection agency that he owed more than $2,700 because he could not fulfill his full 36-month tour of duty.

9. Thanks for the URL. Do you remember when they reported . . .
about the soldiers who had been injured, and while they were hospitalized in Germany (I think) they were having to pay $8 a day for their own meals while they were in the hospital? I remember some senators checking into and some actually paying for them theirselves. I'm sure I can find something about it if I search.

Thanks again.

2. I saw part of it. That was good.
To those who didn't see it, it showed how the maimed servicemen are coming back and being mistreated by the government. They're losing their jobs and their houses. The government even wanted one guy to pay it back for, I think, his medical care.

3. I missed the first few minutes but I popped a tape in the VCR
to record Nightline and when I saw what the topic was I hit record and got the rest of it all the way through Nightline.

The Military stories and the babysitter yelling at the kid stories were good.

5. A link would be helpful, or even a mention of what the topic was.
A little specificity would make your post alot more useful.

7. One young soldier who had been severely injured in Iraq
was living out of his car. The government wanted him to pay back his $2700 sign-up bonus. The government had it put on his credit report that he had not paid back a $2700 government LOAN!
The soldier could not get an apartment because of this.

Another soldier had lost both arms in Iraq. The service could not "find" his discharge papers for a year. He had previously worked as an electrician and now has no way to support his family and is in danger of losing his home.
