Take your Kerry yard signs in at dusk.
Here in my suburban Pittsburgh neighborhood, Kerry yard signs were only up two days before being stolen during the night. Prime suspects are neighbors - no one else would be here after dark (interesting - you can live around people for decades but with a uniter like Bush in the White House, free speech is not respected). The replacement signs are twice as big, chained to the fence during the day - brought in at night.

1. this is the obvious solution to the stolen sign threads that come up
and you're the first i've even seen propose it. it's so obvious that it's brilliant.

sad it's come to that, though.

2. No surrender
A friend of a friend of mine in Atlanta keeps getting his Kerry signs stolen. His new idea is to save poop from when he takes his dog on walks and distribute it freely all around the area where the sign is planted. He figures at least the creeps will be forced to "step in something" as we say here in the South, and possibly even slip and bang their head on the post holding up the sign. Then a few hours later they'll awaken on a dewy lawn, smeared with all-natural organic fertilizer.

4. Here is another Bluff Idea ...
Print up some labels that say something like:
"Smile, You Are Being Video Taped"
Make it small enough so that passing cars can not read it, but large enough that someone approaching the sign will see it.
You would be amazed at how the mere thought of being videotaped can change behavior.

Another good one is to put another sign up (perhaps closer to the house), that says something like:
"Number of Kerry signs stolen by Cowards"
and put a number on it. As they go away, increase the number (even if they take the count sign also).

Have Fun

Cheers
Drifter

3. I disagree that it is the neighbors ...
Unless you have assholes for neighbors, it probably is not them.

Mine was up for about 6 days, before it (and all Kerry signs on our street) disappeared. I called the local DNC office, and they were out. When I told her where I was, she said that there have been a rash of sign stealing in my town (almost exclusively). Neighboring towns have had negligible occurances.

It appears to be someone going from neighborhood to neighborhood to steal signs (across a large area). This was a coordinated effort to do this in a particular area.

We were told to fill out a police report, since it is vandalism. I decided not to because, the police have better things to do than chase after petty sign theives.

Many of my neighbors are Repukes (some with signs, some not). We all know each other well enough to leave this crap alone. It just is not worth it.

Cheers
Drifter

6. There's a wonderful anti-chimp sign
off the 210 freeway east of LA that no one can steal. A homeowner decorated his roof with big white lights that spell out DUMP BUSH. His home backs to the freeway and those lights are visible to every passing motorist. Thousands of cars an hour. That homeowner is a true patriot.

7. I find the thefts and vandalism on both sides despicable and shameful
Regardless of party or which signs are being destroyed or stolen, I hope as many of the vandals are caught and prosecuted to the extent of the law.

I have zero tolerance for vandalism of personal property.

8. Get a motion sensor.... with a 110 outlet.... hook it up your sprinkler
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 04:03 PM by Medialize
timer or valve to it... put a sprinkler head at the base of your post... and sit and wait.... You might even want to put some food dye in your hose before you attach it. I play for keeps.

9. No, get a video camera with a good nightshot
set it up to tape after dark.

A local story (Akron Beacon Journal) had, of course, a Repuke who said that he did just that, and caught on film some guys marking and knocking over his sign. I bet he just caught some of his drinking buddies.

Funny thing was, the same edition of the paper had a news story about how the garbage collectors have been knocking over signs indiscriminately, mainly because the election signs were the wrong distance from the curb. Go figure.

10. Noticed today
Aside from a few more K/E signs popping up, one person's sign in town now has an added "THOU SHALT NOT STEAL" sign attached to his. Damn freepers must be starting up around these parts.
