A picture of me and the wife...
Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 11:43 PM by Flatulo
Since I tend to only post here in the dungeon, I thought I would satisfy your collective curiosity - just how ugly can a guy who chose Flatulo for a screen name be? Well now you can judge for yourself.

That's me on the right, and my lovely wife of 23 years, Jayne, giving me the closest thing to a lapdance that I am ever likely to get again in this lifetime.

Mods: If there is a more appropriate forum for such blatant self-promotion, feel free to move this.

25. Thanks Hope. She's a great gal, and we have a wonderful son.
For as long as I can remember, we've always been giving each other little gifts every time either of us comes home. I'll bring her some nice locally-grown corn or some almond biscotti, she'll bring me a chocolate muffin or some Animal Crackers in the little box.

It's the little things that keep a marriage working. I spend one hour every night with her watching 'Days of Our Lives' even though I can't stand the show. I just love that she enjoys it.

But our son is our true pride and joy. We've tried to raise him to be a peaceful, thoughtful, unselfish and compassionate person. He wants to go to law school, so we've obviously failed. :)

You know, if you didn't waste so much time on DU, your wife could afford shoes.

This is normally done in the DU Lounge, but what the heck... Back at you:

That was two weeks ago, after going to India to check out whether our NWO operatives had succeeded in cutting all the right internet cables.

Tell the boys at the NWO photo lab they do good work. These ones look like actual people (unlike some of their previous work - CGI plane people I'm talking to you).

You guys'll have to survive without a shot of me - I just looked through my files and I have thousands of photos of jobsites but not a single one of myself, because I'm always the one taking the photos.

27. I had always said that once I had a reason to, I'd change my life around..
My way of thinking was that I had no responsibilities, no family waiting at home, no one but me depending on me. I did what I wanted to, when I wanted to and for no other reason than *because* I wanted to. I lived for the moment and didn't care whether I lived of died the next moment.

I was almost 30 when my first child was born, but I started my change the very DAY I found out I was gonna be a daddy... I sold my bike and moved to a new area and made new friends...

It was pure personal redemption, nothing religious about it. I'm atheist in that I don't believe in a "god", "higher power" or "divine interloper/creator", but agnostic because I believe there *is* something more intelligent out there and that we're not alone in this world...

Peace to you, too, bro....

67. Conquer yourself, and conquer the universe

Much more inspirational than the stories in which "(Fill in evil spirit) had control of me as a youth, and then (fill in deity) redeemed me". I can't figure out folks who prefer to be pawns on some cosmic chessboard, or expect that kind of story is going to inspire someone else to wait around for Cthulu to smile upon them.

IMHO nailing that "something" down in words is a fruitless exercise that eventually cheapens whatever it is. But I think it would prefer that we take responsibility for ourselves.

LOVE the picture, you two look good together - and great idea to start a pic thread in here!

It's obvious that we're all a passionate bunch of people, and sometimes our well-meaning posts carry too much emotion with them. Before we know it, insults are hurled, people defend themselves, and the entire crux of the thread is lost.

Seeing faces with the names forces all of us to realize that we are REAL people - not internet personalities.

Here I am, last fall with my boyfriend. He's from Chicago, I'm from Jersey - and we met on the net in 2006.....

Some of the OCTabots here are extremely bad, even mentally unstable, people. I would warn any advocates of 9/11 skepticism not to disclose their identities here, including how you look, if you want to avoid stalking or worse.

This kind of thread happened on DU once before (not in this forum), right after the 2004 election and the results were not good.

"Some of the OCTabots here ..."

Now if you like, we can look into the definition of "here" as used on internet bulletin boards, but I think it should be obvious that it means "here on this forum."

With the exception of spooked, none of the names you mention post here, now, do they?

If anyone who is not an OCTer, OCTabot or OCTabarnacle would like to know what I am referring to, feel free to pm me.

63. "Not cricket"? Interesting cultural thing between Brits and Yanks
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 10:30 AM by HamdenRice
When Brits observe something to be unfair or ungentlemanly, they say, "that's just not cricket" -- implying that cricket is a supremely fair and gentlemanly game.

When Yanks observe something as unfair or ungentlemanly, they say, "he's playing hardball" (that means baseball, as opposed to softball), implying hardball (baseball) is a tough somewhat unfair game. I assume it's a reference to the two most violent parts of this otherwise pastoral game -- the brush back, and the slide with cleats raised.

Interesting take on our respective, related games.

84. I always took "hardball" to mean just using a normal baseball

...since not everyone had gloves, and playing barehanded with a regular baseball hurts like a mofo.

"not cricket" strikes me as "unfair", while "hardball" strikes me as playing to the maximum degree of competition, rather than as a recreational game.

I used to play softball for fun, but gave it up because of the testosterone cases who believed there was some point in arguing with the umpire. Once on a base hit, I thought I was safe, and was called out. Heading back to the bench a teammate said, "You were safe, you should have argued with him."

When, in the recorded history of baseball or softball, anywhere or anytime, has anyone ever gotten an umpire to change his or her mind by arguing with the call?

44. Reading comprehension and a mastery of diction can improve your quality of life!
So I hope you'll take the opportunity to improve your skills in these areas.

There is a difference between a bad person or mentally unstable person doing something bad and a conspiracy. A conspiracy requires two or more people working together toward a bad end.

Can you see the difference? Can you see how your error reflects both a reading comprehension and a diction problem?

If you like, I can recommend some "word building" books that are used in the public schools of my city.

45. Oh, well, I'll break down and post a pic of myself

with my old friend Lared, taken many years ago.

I'm the one seated in the center-right and that's Lared behind me and to the left.

you have absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever.

That is a sad existential condition, indeed.

69. You were a printer?

With pin-feed paper no less?

Were you one of those impact line printers or the whiny dot matrix things.

I used to love the Decwriter:

I started out on one of those with dialup on a 300 baud acoustic modem to a PDP-11/70 running RSTS/E. We only dreamed of having something as impressive as LARED.

70. I worked for a company in L.A.
who had a wall of dot matrix printers, maybe five wide by four tall, running constantly. The racket was almost unbearable.

86. My first engineering job was designing print heads for Data General.
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 11:24 PM by Flatulo
Very interesting gadgets. I designed the solenoids. You had to smack this little print wire (seven of them actually) and accelerate it to have 70,000 ergs of energy to print a single dot, then return it in a few milliseconds without overheating the solenoid.

I think we were the first ones to buffer every other line of text so that we could print in both directions as the printhead returned down the carriage.

80. uh, you do know what the rofl smilie means, right?
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 03:01 PM by HamdenRice
I suppose I should have used the sarcasm smilie. The person in that picture is not me, and uh, the computer in the back is not lared, in case you hadn't figured that out. (At any rate, I assume the Lared entity has been migrated onto more modern hardware.)

That's a stock photo of Columbia University's IBM 360. If you right click the photo and click properties, you will discover that the person pictured is someone named "Ortega."

I will confess to having programmed that very same computer as a high school student, using a punch card writer programming in Fortran IV with Watfor and Watfive, however.

82. Um... I didn't really think you were a printer, or that you were the person in the photo

I just missed the tail end of punch cards, and came in at the point where a 1 Meg hard drive was the size of a top-loading washing machine.

65. I hate to say this, but...
I think I used to date your wife years ago. Her name isn't by any chance Erica, is it?

On a more serious note (actually, the above is not serious at all), what a lovely couple you two are. I would add that I always enjoy your posts. Just out of curiousity, how did you choose the name "SweetPea"?

66. No, her name is not Erica
and you did not date her. Trust me.

Pea was a nickname I had when flying and Sweet Pea came about much later afterwards when I needed some on-line moniker. I've used that ever since.

And thanks for the comments.

94. You guys got me wondering......
So at an unguarded moment, I wanted to test out this "Erica" theory. I mean I suppose there always *could* be that possibility!

So at a random time this morning I said "Hey Erica!"

She hit me... "And who might Erica be????"

I explained the whole deal to her. She's not Erica......lol

95. Hmmm, what would you EXPECT "Erica" ...
to do, admit it? The very fact that she denies it proves that it's true (using the "logic" of the "truth" movement"). I'm sure she's practiced this for years, Sweet Pea. I hate to be the one to break it to you. While you're at it, would you please tell that I apologize profusely for the incident with the herd of sheep and the Brazilian police. She'll know what I'm referring to.
