A suicide bomber rocked the center of the Negev capital of Be'er Sheva early Sunday, wounding at least 10 people, two of them seriously, in the first such terror attack since Israel began its withdrawal from the Gaza Strip earlier this month.

Witnesses said the driver of a crowded No. 9 bus in Be'er Sheva found the bomber suspicious, and refused to allow him onto the bus.

The bomber next tried to board a No. 12 bus, but security guards began pursuing him. The bomber then detonated the explosives, seriously wounding the two guards. The wounded were all taken to Soroka Hospital in the city.

A suicide bomb attack at the entrance to the central bus station in Beersheba wounded at least twenty people Sunday morning.

Two of the wounded, both security guards who kept the bomber from entering the bus station, were in critical condition and were evacuated to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba.

The rest of the wounded, most of whom suffered light injuries or shock, were also evacuated to hospital, a spokesman for Magen David Adom said.

A spokesman for hospital said that a total of 20 patients who sustained injuries in the attack were treated there.

Initial investigations suggested that the bomber had intended to blow up at the Soroka Medical Center, Channel 2 reported.

Suicide bomber wounds 48, 2 seriously, in Be'er Sheva blast

By Amos Harel and Nir Hasson, Haaretz Correspondents and Agencies

A suicide bomber rocked the center of the Negev capital of Be'er Sheva early Sunday, wounding at least 48 people, two of them seriously, in the first such terror attack since Israel began its withdrawal from the Gaza Strip earlier this month.

The bomber had aroused the suspicions of the driver of a crowded Number 9 bus. Asked by the bomber if his bus went to Soroka, the driver directed him to another area, then alerted security guards, who pursued the attacker until he set off the bomb.

Witnesses said the alertness of the driver and the guards prevented what could have been a much more costly attack. The explosion occurred during the morning rush hour at the start of the Israeli work week.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which came three days after the Islamic Jihad had sworn "painful" revenge for a raid in which IDF troops killed five Palestinians in their hideout in the West Bank city of Tulkarm.

Not the first terrorist attack over the past few weeks, and unfortunately it probably won't be the last, but in this case at least apart from the bomber there were no deaths. My thoughts go out to the injured...

4. Suicide Bomber Strikes Israeli Bus Station
JERUSALEM - A suicide bomber blew himself up next to a bus at a station in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba on Sunday, wounding at least 10 people, officials said. The attack was the first since Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip this month.

Witnesses said the bomber was stopped by a security guard before he could board the bus.

"I was suspicious of him. He had a large backpack and a plastic bag in his hand," a witness who identified himself as a bus driver named Rami told Israel Radio.

"I pointed him out to the guard. He was about 20 meters (yards) from the bus when he blew up. It was a huge explosion, very big," he said, adding that two security guards had approached the bomber just before the explosion.

Oh, wonderful. Just what people need to create peace and understanding. I am beyond disgusted. But thank heavens it wasn't worse.

An Islamic Jihad suicide bomber rocked the center of the Negev capital of Be'er Sheva early Sunday, critically wounding a security guard and seriously injuring another, in the first such terror attack since Israel began its withdrawal from the Gaza Strip earlier this month.

The man who carried out the Be'er Sheva suicide bombing was identified as Islamic Jihad operative Ayman Za'aqiq, 25, of the village of Beit Umar, located between the West Bank cities of Bethlehem and Hebron.

Islamic Jihad claimed the attack was carried out in cooperation with Fatah, but this report was not immediately confirmed by additional sources.

In addition to the two security guards, 46 other people were wounded in the attack. The guards' quick action in pursuing the bomber saved dozens of lives, witnesses said. The target of the attack, mounted during the morning rush hour at the start of the Israeli work week, may have been Soroka hospital, also the intended target of a foiled suicide bombing earlier this year.
