Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat underwent minor exploratory surgery yesterday in his Ramallah headquarters and is in stable condition, a senior official said.
Doctors carried out a colonoscopy and other tests on him. Arafat, the official added, had complained of a stomach ailment and had been vomiting. "He is under the influence of an anesthetic and is in stable condition," the official told Reuters.
Earlier, Palestinian officials denied that Arafat, 75, might be taken to hospital in Ramallah. The Palestinian Authority on Sunday officially requested permission from the Israel Defense Forces to transfer him to a private hospital in the city and Arafat yesterday received permission from Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz to get the treatment. But Palestinian sources said last night he refused to go.
Sources who visited him said Arafat is pale and has difficulty moving freely. He has had fever for 10 days. Doctors from Egypt and Tunisia who examined him over the weekend found that he had an acute viral infection and was suffering from gallstones. The doctors examined him last night again.
