Peace Roadmap "Dead" - Sharon
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 06:48 PM by Scurrilous
http://www9.sbs.com.au/theworldnews/region.php?id=83864®ion=6

<snip>

"Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has declared that the internationally backed "roadmap" peace blueprint that sought to create an independent Palestinian state by 2005 is dead."

<snip>

"Mr Sharon said that he had decided to implement his own package of unilateral measures, including an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, after reaching this conclusion.

The European Union, Russia, the United Nations and the United States launched the peace blueprint last year amid great fanfare.

The roadmap envisions the creation of a Palestinian state in the Gaza Strip and West Bank along with guarantees for a halt to attacks against Israel."

2. after * bombed the crap out of two countries. . .
he declared "mission accomplished" and promptly pranced over to Jordan with a plan to neutralize a conflict that's been going on "since time immemorial". Like he had a clue. As soon as I heard the disengenuous nomenclature of "the roadmap to peace." I thought, "more like roadkill to peace."

Just like "clear skies", "healthy forests," "no child left behind," and "help america vote," this is more of deceptive and shallow labeling of the short sighted and selfish agenda. It wreaks. Too bad the media is incapable of critical thinking.

7. With a laugh
Of course, it was a lousy plan to begin with. Out of respect for the US, Israeli policy makers studied the plan carefully, and drew up "reservations", which were never fully accepted, but noted by the US President Bush. Sharon vowed to work within the framework of the Road Map, none-the-less.

The PA PM accepted the Plan without hesitation, never intending to implement it at all, and has done little to even pretend to do so.

The Road Map is not only dead, it was still-born.

8. The Roadmap isn't dead -- it was stillborn
Sharon didn't take it seriously. It meant he would have had to make real concessions to real Palestinians.

Arafat didn't want anything to do with it. It meant he would have to share power with a "prime minister". Both prime ministers were appointed by Arafat; neither had any independent political base or any real power.

To Bush, it was just the usual figleaf that allow him to say "see, guys, I'm doing something!" when he really wasn't.

Everybody pretended to drive like they were going somewhere, but the map led to a dead end. And speaking of dead, we are still counting them.
