"PM Ariel Sharon has succeeded where thousands of years of halachic innovations and rabbinic debate have failed: in changing the Passover Seder. The PM might not have meant to, but his disengagement plan has brought Rabbi Shlomo Aviner to announce the addition of a fifth cup of wine to the thousand year old tradition of drinking four cups of wine on Passover.
Rabbi Aviner, who serves as chief rabbi of the settlement of Beit-El as well as head of the Ateret Cohanim yeshiva, has put together a special new prayer to be said with the additional cup. “It’s not a halachic ruling”, the religious leader told Maariv Online, “it’s just an idea”.
The prayer, dedicated to the settlements in Gaza, Judea and Samaria, goes like this: “May it be thy will, O Lord our God and God of our fathers, that not one single settlement be uprooted, and not one single Jew be exiled from his land”.
According to Aviner’s instructions, after drinking the fifth cup, the following words must be said: “And I brought you unto the land upon which I have extended my hand, to give unto Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and I gave unto you as an inheritance, I am the Lord”.
