Bill Moyers NOW - God and Politics in the Holy Land (Christian Zionism)
Increasingly, American evangelical Christians have emerged to form an unlikely alliance with right-wing Jews in Israel. Citing Biblical prophecy, these evangelicals call for all of the West Bank to remain in Israeli hands, and oppose any two-state solution. Sometimes called Christian Zionists, because of their literal belief that a Christian Messiah will come to earth near Jerusalem, they have joined with the Israeli right-wing to oppose any division of Jerusalem. (For more on the union of American Christians and Jews, read the Bill Moyers interview with Yechiel Eckstein and Ralph Reed of Stand for Israel.)

NOW's segment "God and Politics in the Holy Land" examines Christian Zionism's theological interpretation of the Bible and its political application to the modern state of Israel. Learn about the foundation of this movement through a greater understanding of some of the key components.

4. more on "Christian Zionists"
From http://www.cdn-friends-icej.ca/right.html

excerpt:

"...The faithful in Israel are obeying a direct commandment from G-d ("inhabit the land"). Those, on the other hand, who are fighting against G-d (whether intentionally or not) are trying to remove the Jewish people from the land given to them by G-d, especially Judea and Samaria - the very heart of Israel... "

Had God forgotten he gave the land to the Jews when he gave it to the Muslims, or did he change his mind, or did he mean for them to share it?

5. And here I thought this might turn into a flame war. Instead, the silence
is deafening.

6. I can explain
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 09:18 PM by tinnypriv

Silence by one of the factions here is due to the fact that this idiotic, fundamentalist "support for israel" is quite welcomed, but it would not be wise to state that in public.

The silence by everyone else just reflects utter despair.

9. Not despair.
Just an awareness of one's limits.

Life is short, and one cannot spend all of it condemning
stupidity and base factionalism, there would be nothing
left for more productive pursuits.

Still, I can see where it would lead on to a certain
misanthropic attitude, and that could lead to despair if one
was hoping for better things from the human species.

And the truth is, there is little to say that does not boil
down to name-calling and the like. So, agreeing with Thumper,
sometimes it's better to say nothing at all.

11. Locking
I don't think there is very much here that can be further added without getting into the dogmatics of one of several religions and which is unlikely to occur without becoming inflammatory either intentionally or with ill-informed statements.
