Likud MK: Hamas statement on temporary peace is 'tactical'
By Arnon Regular, Haaretz Correspondent and Haaretz Service

Likud MK Yuval Steinitz, the chairman of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Comittee, said Friday that a Hamas statement that it could accept a temporary peace with Israel was "interesting," Israel Radio reported. But, Steinitz added, until Hamas halts its terror activities, the statement is merely "a tactical declaration."

On Wednesday night, Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin said that the movement would agree to a "temporary peace" with Israel in exchange for the establishment of a Palestinian state "on the basis of the 1967 borders," the evacuation of the settlements and the resettlement of all the Palestinian refugees inside Israel.

"The expression definitely made some noise," said Steinitz. "Of course, in order to see that this is a strategic policy change and not just a tactical declaration, similar statements are needed from all Hamas leaders.

So it's "yes" but "no" from Yassin as far as the State of Israel is concerned. There are a few other Terrorist Organizations that have similar intentions, they are the ones that strike inside Israel. Islamic Jihad, PFLP and Fatah, to name the most active groups.

2. Sound-a-likes
Hamas declaring their intention of wanting peace = Bush* proclaiming himself a "compassionate conservative"

From the joke

Q. How can you tell when Bush* is lying?

A. His lips are moving.

Q. How can you tell when Hamas isn't lying?

A. Gee, I don't know either, it hasn't happened yet.

4. Hamas' proposal is hardly serious

A peace based on the 1967 borders and the evacuation of the settlements should be enough to be permanent, not temporary. Yassin's remarks were designed to play on the streets of Palestinian towns, not in foreign capitals.
