Israeli doctor reflects on saving Palestinian baby
Set against the backdrop of the 2007 conflict between Hamas and Fatah, which resulted in hundreds of Qassam rockets being fired at Israeli towns, Precious Life, directed by Israeli television reporter Shlomi Eldar, follows the quest to save Mohammed Abu Mustafa, a four-month-old Palestinian boy from Gaza who was born without an immune system.

When Eldar, a Channel 10 Gaza correspondent, received an urgent phone call from Somech asking him to broadcast a plea to Israelis that Mohammed will die unless he was able to fund a $55,000 bone marrow transplant, Eldar jumped at the story.

His news report resonated with an anonymous Israeli man whose son, a soldier, had been killed in the line of duty. He donated the entire amount.

Somech emphasized that although the film only shows the treatment of one patient, this is not an isolated incident. We have many patients from the Palestinian Authority.

5. One beautiful story does not negate the many countervailing tales of woe.
Be grateful there's nothing in the story to invite its de-recing into oblivion.

What will be the ultimate fate of this kid? What's the motivation? The same money could save thousands of utterly obscure kids from dysentry or cholera.

Spending a large sum on one unrelated child, one mediagenic case, strikes me as very much akin to the medieval practice of purchasing "indulgances" - prepaid absolution, purchased from the Church in anticipation of committing a sin.

7. Serious People...
... believe that if you can see the negative in anything, it will make other people believe they seriously care and that caring (even about things about which you have no clue) makes you a better person and or someone whose opinion we should respect.

"Serious people are dense and know it. But, they think, if they can be grave enough about Yugoslavia their gravity will make up for the fact that - like most people - they don't know what's going on there, and - like all people - they don't know what to do about it. Seriousness is stupidity sent to college." -- P.J. O'Rourke

9. We live in an unfair universe
bemoaning one success because of so many failures is to bemoan the very nature of the universe itself.
