Israel's chief rabbinate severs ties with Vatican
JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel's chief rabbinate severed ties with the Vatican on Wednesday to protest a papal decision to reinstate a bishop who publicly denied 6 million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The Jewish state's highest religious authority sent a letter to the Holy See expressing "sorrow and pain" at the papal decision.

Pope Benedict XVI, faced with an uproar over the bishop, said Wednesday he feels "full and indisputable solidarity" with Jews and warned against any denial of the full horror of the Nazi genocide.

The Vatican and the state of Israel have had their own relationship since establishing diplomatic ties in 1993.

1. Good...
what were they thinking. Are they trying to start yet another holy war?

3. Papa Ratzi blew it
He was given some extremely bad advice, and his move to restore Williamson is about as
well-advised as would the German Federal government be to restore authorization for a Nazi
party, which they haven't (won't happen, either). I suspect he was taking some advice from some
of his more rightist advisers, as well as making an exaggerated move to placate "conservative"
elements in a desperate attempt to shore up fading numbers. I hope and believe this will
have the opposite effect. My mom-in-law, the only Catholic member of my family, was outraged.
At age 81, she isn't going to leave the church over it, but she is extremely upset over it
all the same.

4. The relationship between the vatican and
Jews has always been rather shaky. Given the historical record, this is just truly an outrage.
