Row deepens over peace prize
Row deepens over peace prize
By Katherine Danks
October 23, 2003

THE row sparked by Lord Mayor Lucy Turnbull's decision to boycott the Sydney Peace Prize award for Palestinian MP Dr Hanan Ashrawi deepened today.

NSW Premier Bob Carr told Sydney Radio 2UE that achieving peace in the Middle East meant listening to people from both sides.

"It's only by getting people who have previously been at odds to the negotiating table, that we are going to make any progress," he said.

The main backer of the Sydney Peace Prize, Sydney City Council, will not attend next month's award to Dr Ashrawi because of her criticisms of Israeli government policy.

4. I wonder if Jim will explain...
Why Dr Ashrawi is nuthin' but shit? An article about this was posted a while ago, and after seeing an interview with Dr Ashrawi on Foreign Correspondent, I'm still in the dark as to what the complaints are about her. Is it solely that she dares to criticise Israels policy in the Occupied Territories? She also criticises Arafat and groups like Hamas. For that alone, she deserves the peace prize....

Turnbull? Lucy Turnbull? As in the wife of Malcolm Turnbull, Treasurer of the Liberal Party? That tends to explain her rather moronic decision to boycott the awards, and I wouldn't imagine that her staying away would be any great loss to people who are actually interested in peace...

5. I don't mind
They can give Dr. Ashwari the Sydney prize. She's more moderate than say Erekat. None the less, she supporta some of the Palestinian violence, and acts strange when faced with this contradiction (lying thru her teeth).

At least she is a woman legislator, and that is progressive for the PA.

6. Thanks for adding the bit about her being a woman...
I think there's way too few successful women politicians, and think if women were leaders of some nations, then there'd be far less bloodshed...

Have you got anything I can look at where she supports some of the Palestinian violence? Obviously if she does support it, she supports legitimate forms of resistance, but I'd like to read more about her...

8. Couldn't agree more...
Speaking of Amira Hass, she's an incredible journalist. I've just started reading a collection of her articles called 'Reporting From Ramallah - An Israeli Journalist in an Occupied Land'....
